Galician

Galician is the native language of Galicia and shares official status with Spanish. The vast majority of the population speaks both languages, and two-thirds use Galician to varying degrees in their daily lives.

Galician citizens have the right to use the Galician language in all areas of public life. Both Galician and Spanish are mandatory subjects in all schools.

At the university level, both faculty and students can generally choose freely which official language (Spanish or Galician) they prefer to use. It is common to have classes in Galician and to hear it spoken by classmates.

Galician is a Romance language closely related to Portuguese. If you speak Portuguese, in any of its variants, learning Galician will be very easy for you. Likewise, if you learn Galician, you will find it much easier to communicate with Portuguese speakers.

The CLM offers regular Galician language courses for those coming from outside Galicia, including Galician language courses for non-Galician speakers, which have been held at USC since 1997, as well as summer courses. It also organizes Galician language proficiency exams for those in the USC community who do not possess another official certification."

Here you can find the equivalence of CLM course levels with the CEFR.

The USC Center for Modern Languages offers regular Galician language courses for those coming from outside Galicia who are over 18 years old. These courses are designed for non-Galician speakers and are aligned with levels A1, A2, B1, and B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

The courses last 50 hours (40 hours of in-person sessions and 10 hours of guided independent work). The courses are offered either in a semester format (September-December, February-May) or as an intensive 2-month course.

Groups are limited to a maximum of 15 students.

To obtain the course certificate and ECTS credits, students must pass the assessment and attend at least 80% of the classes.

The A2 level is the basic level. Individuals who wish to take a Galician course at this level can enroll directly through the Secretaría Virtual.

For people from Spanish or Portuguese-speaking countries who have never studied Galician, the starting level will be A2, and they must enroll in "other levels – with certified level at the CLM."

Those who have an accredited level at the CLM because they passed a course in the previous semester can enroll directly in the next level.

People with nationality from Spanish or Portuguese-speaking countries can enroll directly in level A2.

Those who wish to enroll in levels higher than A2, are not from Spanish or Portuguese-speaking countries, and do not have an accredited level at the CLM, must first register for a placement test, which is free of charge.

The placement test only authorizes enrollment in the level achieved, but it does not serve as accreditation for the corresponding level according to the CEFR.

If multiple dates are offered for the placement test, it is recommended to attend the first session, as course spots are filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

The placement test is free of charge for students.

Students from countries where Spanish or Portuguese is not an official language must provide proof of their knowledge of Spanish or Galician through a B1 or B2 level certificate, depending on the case, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) in order to pursue undergraduate or master's studies at USC.

The accreditation of knowledge of the Galician language at levels B1 and B2 holds the same validity as Spanish for access to undergraduate and master's programs for students coming from outside Galicia.

Candidates for permanent teaching positions at USC are required to demonstrate knowledge of the Galician language, with a Celga 3 level (equivalent to B2). If they do not hold this certification, they have two-year period from their hiring or appointment to obtain it.

To validate their Galician language skills at USC, the university offers several options:

  • Presenting a certificate or diploma recognized by USC.
  • Passing a Galician course at the USC CLM that completes a level of the CEFR.
  • Taking the Galician language proficiency test at the CLM before starting their studies. If the test is not passed, the candidate must enroll in a CLM course and retake the exam on the next scheduled date.

In USC undergraduate studies, credits for transversal competencies can be recognized, for example, for language courses taken at the CLM, up to a maximum of 6 ECTS.

For students from other autonomous communities who have not completed their pre-university studies in Galicia and for international students, credits for Galician courses at the CLM are recognized as follows:

  • A2: 3 ECTS
  • B1: 4 ECTS
  • B2: 5 ECTS
