Management of external reports of the Thesis
Formal Ceremony of Thesis defense
Part 1. Presentation
- The Chairperson opens the session indicating the title of the doctoral thesis and the name of the doctoral student.
- The Chairperson introduces the committee members to the audience
- The Chairperson informs that according to Spanish legislation the ceremony will have two consecutive parts: presentation of the research work (between 45 and 60 min) and discussion with the committee (between 45 and 60 min)
- The Chairperson gives the floor to the candidate apprizing him/her that for getting international mention, he/she must address at least in two European languages.
Part 2. Discussion with the Committee
- During the questions round, the Chairperson will call the Secretary and Vocal to participate, and finally him/her in the last turn. Each member has a maximum of 20 min for discussion.
- One the debate between the panel and the doctoral student has finished, the Chairperson gives the floor to the thesis supervisors, for any comment.
- Finally, the Chairperson invites other Doctors present in the room to address comments or questions.
- The session is suspended for deliberation. The audience must leave the Auditorium
Part 3. Final
- The meeting is resumed with the call of the Secretary and the Chairperson reads out the rating of the doctoral thesis.
- The rating can be Pass (aprobado), Merit (notable) or Distinction (sobresaliente)
- In the case of Distinction, it can be further awarded with “Cum laude” after a secret votation of the committee. The Committee cannot inform the audience about the result.
- The Chairperson gives floor to the coordinator of the PhD program or Head of the Department to deliver a gift to the new Doctor.
- Optional: The Chairperson delivers the insignia of Doctor to candidate
- Optional: The Chairperson gives floor to the supervisors for a short speech.
- Optional: The Chairperson gives floor to the candidate for a short speech.
END OF THE SESSION
The Microsoft TEAMS application will be used for the development of the thesis defense, and at the technical level there will be a PD professor who will assume the role of technical moderator of the application. This person will be in charge of giving access permits to those attending the event and of effectively conveying the instructions determined by the president of the court.
