Physics for the Life Sciences

-Know how to apply the fundamental concepts of kinematics, dynamics and equilibrium conditions in the human body
-Know how to apply the biomechanical knowledge of the human body.
-Know how to apply laws of scale to different races and genders.
-Know how to apply the fundamental equation of fluid static to the effects of gravity on life-related fluids.
-Knowing how to determine blood pressure with a cannula and using a sphygmomanometer. Know how to distinguish the different types of fluid movement in pipelines. Examples: movement of blood in the circulatory system, injections, etc.
· Know how to analyze the movement of fluids in the vascular beds, with special emphasis on cardiac functioning.
- Know how to apply the concepts of control and feedback common in living beings.
-To understand thermodynamics as a science capable of explaining the processes involving the transfer of energy in living beings.
-To know the mechanisms of heat transmission in living beings.
-Know the diffusion processes through membranes and their application in filtration processes. Examples: the biological membrane and the mechanisms of transport of matter through it, dialysis, water purification with reverse osmosis, membrane processes in the dairy industry, etc.
-Know the concepts of electric field and potential and their importance in biological systems. Understanding the double electrical layer as a biological membrane model.
-Functional assimilation of the generation and propagation of the action potential and its essential elements.
-Know some of the techniques for detecting magnetic signals. Know their application in biological systems and technological processes.
-Know how to prepare and present a good laboratory memory with analysis of experimental data, consistent with the parts of physics treated in each practice, and with the corresponding conclusions.

IN SUMMARY, it is a question of analyzing from a theoretical and practical point of view the principles of the Physics, and how they allow to justify different behaviors and situations in the field of what are the Sciences of Life. The student must complete the course with good knowledge and handling of the concepts included in the program, and with a vision of the interest that Physics has to reach an adequate degree of understanding of different concepts that will arise when you study other subjects gives your degree.

Basic competences:
CB2 - That the students can apply his knowledge to his work or vocation of a professional form and possess the competitions that are in the habit of being demonstrated by means of the production and defense of arguments and the resolution of problems inside his area of study
CB4 - That the students could transmit information, ideas, problems and solutions to a both specialized and not specialized public.
CB5 - That the students have developed those necessary skills of learning to undertake later studies with a high degree of autonomy.

General competences:
CG5 - Knowledge for the accomplishment of measurements, calculations, valuations, appraisals, expert's reports, studies, reports, plans of labors and other analogous works.
CG29 - To acquire the basic training for the investigative activity, being capable of formulating hypothesis, gathering and interpreting the information for the resolution of problems following the scientific method, and understanding the importance and the limitations of the scientific thought in sanitary and nutritional matter.

Transverse competences:
CT1 - Capacity of analysis and synthesis.
CT2 - Aptitude to be employed at equipment (included in CG2).
CT3 - Capacity for the resolution of problems.

Specific competences:
CE2 - To know the structure and function of the human body from the molecular level to the complete organism in the different stages of the life.
CE7 - To acquire skills of teamwork as unit in the one that is structured of form uni or multidisciplinary and to interdiscipline the professionals and other personnel related to the diagnostic evaluation and treatment of dietetics and nutrition.

In theory classes (33 hours) explain the theoretical concepts established in the subject program, trying to follow a methodology that facilitates the acquisition of knowledge by students. The active participation of the student will be sought.
In the seminar classes (4 hours) the problems previously proposed to the students will be analyzed and discussed by means of bulletins, which can be done individually or in groups.
Individual tutorials will be conducted to clarify problems and questions of each student, as well as tutorials in the classrooms (2 hours) where the understanding and difficulties that the students have had about the different knowledge acquired will be monitored, trying to solve all the doubts and problems that have arisen. It will also propose tasks of reflection and application to the field of Dietetics and Nutrition.
In the internships (12 hours), compulsory attendance, the knowledge and concepts acquired by the student in the theoretical and seminar classes are applied. The internships will be carried out in the laboratory in groups of two students.
The USC Virtual Campus will be used to support teaching

-The completion of the internships of the subject is mandatory, and the workbook to be presented by each group will be evaluated. Score: up to 0.5 points. Competencies evaluated: CB2, CB4, CB5, CG5, CT2, CE7.
-The continuous evaluation (attendance and activity in class, bulletins of practical cases and miscellaneous work) will involve a maximum of 2 points (up to 1 point attendance, and up to 1 point class work). Competencies assessed: CB2, CB4, CB5, CG29, CG5, CT1, CT3, CE2.
-Exams: Final exams will be made of the part of BioCalorimetry and BioTermodynamics (including Energy Metabolism) and the Rest of the Matter.In general, the tests will consist of a part of theory-questions and another of problems, each of which will be scored over 10, and will be averaged between them provided that the rating of each of them is not less than 4. Otherwise, the test will be suspended with the lowest grade. The examination shall be approved if the above average is equal to or greater tan 5.
The final exam will count a maximum of 7.5 points in the final grade of the subject (e.g.: a 10 in the exam will mean a 7.5 for the calculation of the final grade, which will be 10 if the 2.5 points are reached in the continuous and practical evaluation). Below 5 in the examination will automatically mean suspending the subject, and not taking into account the qualification of the continuous and practical evaluation (in this case the final qualification that will appear in the record of the subject will be 0.75 x examination note). Competencies assessed: CB2, CB4, CB5, CG29, CG5, CT1, CT3, CE2.

In the case of fraudulent exercises or tests, the provisions of the "Regulations for the assessment of students' academic performance and for the review of grades" shall apply.

The student for the monitoring and compression of the contents of the subject should employ at least 45 hours for the teaching exposition, 4 hours for the seminars, 28 hours for the accomplishment of the proposed works (bulletins, virtual campus and memory of practices), 4 hours for group tutorials. For the preparation of the examination it will be necessary at least 14 hours and of the order of 4 hours for its realization.

- Carry out the exercises and questions proposed.
- Consult the different type of bibliography recommended by the teacher.

Teaching languages: Spanish in the teaching exhibitions, but the consultations in Galician will be facilitated.
