The aim of this course is to provide the students knowledge about the basics of machines and mechanisms, familiarizing them with the tools for the design and dimensioning of its parts, applying the principles and own calculations of the resistance of materials. In short, it must achieve to train students to perform kinematic and dynamic analysis of mechanisms and machines and to design and draft the different structural systems from the analysis of the mechanical properties of materials.
The contents of this subject according to the report of the degree are: Knowledge of the principles of theory of machines and mechanisms. Knowledge and use of the principles of resistance of materials. Fundamentals of geotechnical engineering. Calculating structures and pressure vessels.
Therefore, the course is structured in three parts:
SECTION I. Fundamentals of machines
Chapter 1. Introduction to theory of machines.
Chapter 2. Kinematic analysis of mechanisms and machines.
Chapter 3. Dynamic analysis of mechanisms and machines.
Chapter 4. Machine elements: cams, gears, transmissions and screw mechanisms.
SECTION II. Strength of Materials
Chapter 5. Introduction
Chapter 6. Traction and Compression. Analysis of stresses and deformations. Stresses in thin walled tanks.
Chapter 7. Flexion. Analysis of stresses and deformations.
Chapter 8. Buckling. Combined flexion. Bar shear and torsion.
Chapter 9. Actions in buildings. Calculation of structures.
SECTION III. Practices
Practices of Fundamental of machines
Practices of Strength of Materials

The skills to be developed during the course are:
General
CG.6. Capacity to manage specifications, regulations and mandatory standards.
CG.11. Knowledge, understanding and ability to implement the necessary legislation in the exercise of the profession of Industrial Engineer.
Specific
CI.7. Knowledge of the principles of theory of machines and mechanisms.
CI.8. Knowledge and use of the principles of resistance of materials.
Cross-curricular
CT.4. Skills for the use and development of IT applications.
CT.6. Troubleshooting.
CT.8. Teamwork.
In the lectures, the master-type teaching to present the contents will be combined with solving practical-type exercises that illustrate the theoretical contents. The seminars will focus on the approach and resolution of practical cases in order to emphasize and complement the contents seen in the lectures. The active participation of students will be seek and encouraged in both the lectures and seminars.
In the practical hours in the computer lab, students will use specific software (WinMecC, MDSolids, for example). Also, it can be necessary to use other mathematical tools such as Excel, etc. to perform the kinematic and dynamic analysis of mechanisms and calculation of structures.
The two-hour group tutorials will be devoted to see safety aspects in the design of structures and mechanisms. In both cases, students will prepare a report which will especially consider the application of the concepts referred to in the course.
Learning Management System (Moodle) will be used for the distribution of the course materials and other complementary materials to expand the topics covered in the class and encourage student self-study, as well as spreadsheets (Excel) to solve some of the problems of the problem collections. Also, it will be used as a communication tool between student and teacher.
The competences are considered in the teaching methodology in the following way:
CG.6 Lectures, Seminars and Tutorials
CG.11 Lectures and Tutorials
CI.7 Lectures, Seminars, Tutorials, and Practices
CI.8 Lectures, Seminars, Tutorials and Practices
CT.4 Practices
CT.6 Seminars, Tutorials, Practices
CT.8 Seminars, Tutorials (Section II), Practices
The evaluation will consist of the sum of the following ratings:
a. Exam: 60% (30% Section I and 30% Section II). Mandatory
b. Practices (Section III): 15%. Mandatory.
c. Activities: 20% (10% Section I and 10% Section II).
d. Tutorials: 5%. Mandatory
For sections b., C. and d. are taken into account in the final score, it will be necessary to achieve a minimum of 35% in each of the exam sections.
Prior to taking the final exam, students will know the marks obtained in paragraphs b., c. and d. It will be considered NOT PRESENTED in both Opportunities, the student who has not done any of the 3 mandatory items (practices, group tutorials and exam).
Failure to pass the subject at the First Opportunity, the student will be assessed again at the Second Opportunity of paragraph a. (exam).
Activities and competences Assessment:
Competence Activities Assessment

The subject has a workload of 6 ECTS; 1 ECTS credit corresponds to 25 hours of total work. The following table shows an approximate breakdown of these hours of work:
Activity Face-to-face hours Factor Personal work TOTAL
Lectures 27.0 1.2 34.0 61
Seminar 12.0 1.5 18.0 30
Computer lab 10.0 0.7 7.0 17
Group tutorials 2.0 4.0 8.0 10
Individual tutorials 2.0 1.5 3.0 5
Exam and revision 5.0 4.4 22.0 27
TOTAL 58 - 92 150
The face to face hours indicate the number of hours in the class for the various activities undertaken (theory, problems, class work and exam), the factor indicates the estimate of hours the student has to spend per hour of activity, the personal work is the computation of the factor and face to face hours product, and the total is the total workload involved in each activity.
It's recommended that students have already coursed Mathematics, Physics, Computing, Graphic Expression and Materials Science subjects. Class attendance and the use of Learning Management System (Moodle) in accordance with the instructions outlined above are recommended.
The subject will be taught in spanish and/or galician, although English information sources will be handled.
