- To develop managerial skills in the organization of a group of undergraduate students in charge of the development of an engineering project.
- To encourage effective leadership, with an ethical commitment, applying basic management and direction tools.
- To train students in the valorization of human capital through effective communication, detection of weaknesses and strengths, professional motivation and conflict resolution.
- To generate skills for the acquisition of responsibilities, time management, critical vision and decision making.
- Improve the ability to transmit scientific-technical terms.
- To introduce students to the use of useful tools in the technical and temporal monitoring of projects.
Project management and monitoring methods: preparation of timetables and computer tools applied to project management. Application of the theoretical concepts introduced in the other subjects of the module to the management of a project related to chemical engineering to be carried out by teams of undergraduate students.
BASIC
- Project Management Institute (2008). A Guide to the project management body of knowledge: PMBOK guide. 4th Ed. PMI. Pennsylvania.
COMPLEMENTARY
- UNE-ISO 21500:2013 - Guidelines for the direction and management of projects.
- UNE-ISO 10006:2018 - Quality management. Guidelines for quality management in projects.
The knowledge, competences and skills that must be developed, according to the master's degree report are:
- CN04 - Acquire advanced knowledge for the design and holistic understanding of chemical processes, from both a fundamental and practical perspective.
- CN05 - Know the basics of entrepreneurship and management skills in the framework of business management.
- CP03 - Design products, processes, systems and services of the chemical industry, as well as the optimization of others already developed, taking as a technological basis the different areas of chemical engineering, including processes and transport phenomena, separation operations and the design of chemical, nuclear, electrochemical and biochemical reactions.
- CP06 - Manage and organise companies as well as production and service systems, applying knowledge and skills of industrial organisation, commercial strategy, planning and logistics, commercial and labour law, financial and cost accounting.
- CP07 - Direct and manage the organisation of work and human resources applying criteria of industrial safety, quality management, occupational risk prevention, sustainability and environmental management.
- CP08 - Manage and carry out verification, control of facilities, processes and products, as well as certification, audits, verifications, tests and reports.
- HD03 - Communicate conclusions, together with the knowledge and reasons that support them, to specialised and non-specialised audiences in a clear and unambiguous way.
- HD05 - Perform adequately the establishment and development of interpersonal relationships.
- HD10 - Develop skills associated with teamwork (cooperation, leadership, active choice) and lead and define multidisciplinary teams, capable of solving technical changes and managerial needs in national and international contexts.
- HD11 - Master the management of time and critical situations.
In this course, emphasis will be made on items CN04, CN05, CP07, HD05, HD10 and HD11.
Students enrolled in this subject will manage a project carried out by teams of students of the degree in Chemical Engineering (or with related contents). Attention will be paid to the aspects of technical direction, management and planning.
The expository teaching of the subject is focused on the approach of objectives and exposition of concepts, applied to the management of engineering projects (CN04, CP03).
Likewise, the objectives to be achieved with the computer programs that will be used to carry out the project management will be presented in seminars in the computer classroom (CP06, HD11).
The students of the subject will define a selection process to form the managed teams. The process to be developed will be defined and they will direct the realization of the project (application of material and energy balances to a process with the consideration of thermodynamic aspects, chemical reaction, safety, economic, environmental...). The seminars will be carried out under the supervision of the teaching staff of the subject (corroboration of the performance of the project directors) or without it (undergraduate groups under the direction of the master students(CN05, CP06, CP07, CP08, HD05, HD10, HD11). Group tutoring is aimed at detecting strengths and correcting weaknesses of the project managers.
Students will also be able to make any queries they wish in individualized tutorials during the timetable established for this purpose.
The Virtual Campus will be used as a teaching support tool.
- Temporal description of the activities:
Lectures (5 h): Presentation of the subject. Project management. Functions of the director. Project management and monitoring methods: preparation of schedules and computer tools applied to project direction and management.
Interactive seminar sessions (27.5 h): Application of the theoretical concepts introduced in the remaining subjects of the module to the direction of a project linked to chemical engineering to be carried out by teams of undergraduate students. Effective management of the work team.
Computer seminar sessions (4 h): Project management and monitoring methods: preparation of schedules and computer tools applied to project direction and management.
Group Tutoring: To be fixed between the 3rd and 4th week of the course.
The delivery of the report of the project carried out by the degree team is a requirement to be able to be submitted for evaluation.
The evaluation at the first opportunity will be based on:
- Oral evaluation consisting of the presentation of the activities carried out and achievements: 40%.
- Work/activities consisting of the sum of several elements: 50%.
- Project carried out by the team grade directed: 10% of the grade.
- Report on the technical evaluation of the project: 20 %.
- Final Gantt chart, revised and compared to the initial version: 20 %.
- Teacher's report on the quality of the direction based on the development of the seminars: 10 %.
In case of not passing the subject in the first opportunity, an additional report will be requested in the second opportunity, which will include at least a diagram of activities and resources of the project built from the experience developed.
Repeating students will have to carry out the planned activities in their entirety.
The assessment of knowledge and competences will be carried out mainly through the oral examination (CN04, CP06, CP07, CP08) and the evaluation of the submitted project (CP03, CP06, CP07, CP08). . The skills/skills will be assessed through the supervision of the seminars of the working teams supported by the assessment of the undergraduate students through a questionnaire designed for this purpose (HD05, HD10, HD11).
For cases of fraudulent performance of exercises or tests, the provisions of the Regulations for the evaluation of the academic performance of students and grade review will apply.
The 112.5 hours associated with a 4.5 ECTS subject like this are divided into 39.5 hours of sessions with the teaching staff and 73 hours of personal work by the students.
Classes will be in Spanish language.
In case of discrepancy among the different versions of this guide, the content of the Spanish language guide will prevail.
