-To acquire a basic knowledge about the nervous system and how the transmission of signals takes place, taking into consideration the different levels of organization: cellular-molecular; synaptic; and behavioral circuits
Specific goals:
1. Basic knowledge of the constituents of the nervous system
2. Neuronal signals: how are they generated, how are they passed from one to another, and what they encode.
3. Neurotransmitter-receptor interactions.
4. Analysis and individual study of each neurotransmitter.
Theoretical (26h) Presential 100% compulsory
Expositives
1. Cellular components of nervous tissue (2h).
2. Information processing in dendrites: postsynaptic potentials and subthreshold currents.(4h).
3. Neuronal discharge patterns. Neuronal circuits and neuronal coding.(2h)
4. Ion channels: properties. Molecular biology of voltage-sensitive ion channels (5h).
5. Types of neuronal communication: electrical and chemical synaptic transmission. Chemical neurotransmission: stages. Neurotransmitter release: excitation-secretion coupling. Short-term synaptic plasticity (5h).
6. Neurotransmitter receptors. Neurotransmitter reuptake: transporters (3.5h).
7. Pharmacology and biochemistry of synaptic transmission.(4.5h).
Interactive seminar.(2h+2h). Presential and 100% compulsory
Questions and problems related to the topics of the program (e.g. selectivity, rectification, ion channel blocking).
Labs (9h) Presential and 100% compulsory
Laboratory/computer interactives.
Subthreshold currents. Synaptic function. Models of synapses and circuits. Tutorials: (2h)
