* To introduce the student to the conceptual bases and objectives of current orthodontics.
* To explain and instruct the student on the normal development of oral functions and occlusion, the aetiology and diagnosis of malocclusions and craniofacial growth and development.
* To develop practical activities and/or clinical seminars in which this theoretical knowledge is embodied and reinforced.
1.- A new concept of dental/orthodontic health in the VICA Society. Orthodontics: concepts and objectives. Health, aesthetics and quality of life in orthodontics. Ideal, normal and malocclusion from different points of view. Concept of normal and ideal occlusion throughout history. Current description of normal-ideal occlusion.
2.- Occlusal form and function. Functional occlusion: types and characteristics. Centric relation. Maximum intercuspidation. Relation of dental occlusion with the TMJ (temporomandibular joint). Digital functional occlusal analysis: the virtual articulator.
