The main objective of the course is to familiarize students with some fundamental concepts related to the technical, commercial and, above all, economic-financial evaluation of business creation projects in the field of the environmental process industry and related industrial sectors. , as well as the main financial aspects derived from business management and how to make it compatible with sustainability and corporate social responsibility in the context of a circular economy. In particular, it is intended that the student be able to carry out the analysis and valuation of any investment project at the end of the course, with special emphasis on determining the profitability of the project and the analysis of the financial risk that it entails. Knowing how to integrate sustainability into the company's profitability and risk analysis can help technicians and engineers to propose and design the most appropriate actions and projects for the company and to convince senior management of the advisability of putting them into practice. . The various plots that business management contains will be reviewed, highlighting the importance of risk management, innovation and sustainability in the company.
The contents that are developed in the course are articulated around those indicated in the subject descriptor included in the Master's in Environmental Engineering study plan:

The syllabus is divided into 3 topics with 12 basic sections, which are detailed below:

It is intended to contribute to achieving the competencies included in the report of the Master's degree in Environmental Engineering:
- Basic and general: CB6, CB7, CB8, CB9, CB10, CG2 and, with greater intensity, the CG6, CG7 and CG9 skills.
- Transversals: CT1, CT2 and CT3.
- Specific: CE7 (Lead and manage technically and economically projects, facilities, plants, companies and technology centers in the field of environmental processes industry and related industrial sectors) and CE11 (Identify actions in the field of circular economy, defining options within the new business models)
The program covers the topics that are considered essential to provide students with the skills required in planning and evaluating the creation of a company and in the key aspects of its sustainable management. In the face-to-face teaching hours, an attempt will be made to delve into the most relevant and innovative aspects for the student, making a more superficial review of those already dealt with in other subjects. Throughout the course, reference will be made to the specific bibliography to be used to broaden the knowledge acquired in each topic. Teaching of an eminently practical nature will be given, resorting to the use of real cases to exemplify and clarify the contents of the program, making use of the appropriate computer tools and promoting autonomous and team work. The USC virtual campus will be used to provide study material and work to students and channel the delivery of work and communications with the professor.
In the weekly teaching hours, an attempt will be made to follow the methodological guidelines mentioned below:
- Make the logical rigor of Economic and Financial Theory compatible with the necessary expository clarity that allows a better understanding of the concepts covered, through the use of examples that specify the concepts introduced and the results obtained.
- Theoretical demonstrations and mathematical training of the analyzed models will be the object of attention on numerous occasions in order to introduce students to their use before using the computer tools.
- There will be the support of the appropriate computer tools at all times.
- Solve exercises that allow the student to practice and verify the assimilation of the exposed contents.
- Promote teamwork both within the teaching center and outside it.
- Promote dialogue in the classroom and active participation in class.
Specifically, the development of the following activities is foreseen, which will contribute to the development of the skills indicated:
- Block A (related to topic 1):
- A1: Workshop to propose business ideas within the framework of sustainability (CG2, CB6, CB7, CB8, CT1, CT3, CE11)
- A2: Identification of the main agents of the Galician entrepreneurial ecosystem (CB10, CT1, CE7).
- A3: Review of administrative and legal procedures for the creation of companies (CB6, CE7)
- A4: Review of real examples of startups (CB9, CT1, CE7).
- Block B (related to topic 2)
- B1: Management analysis in mature companies (CG6, CG7, CG9, CB9, CT1, CT2, CE7).
- B2: Proposal for solutions to improve sustainability in companies (CG2, CG7, CB8, CT1, CT3, CE11).
- Block C (related to topic 3):
- C1: Review of a real business plan (CB7, CT1, CE7).
- C2: Financial feasibility analysis of a project (CB7, CB9, CT1, CE7).
The virtual classroom of the subject will be used as a communication tool with the students, offering them information on the teaching program throughout the course in the classroom and complementary materials for the study of the subject (presentations of contents in each subject, scientific articles- relevant technicians, web resources).
At the beginning of the course, students will be provided with the following material on the virtual campus of the subject:
• TEACHING GUIDE: the teaching guide approved for the subject (Galician, Spanish).
• PRESENTATIONS: the presentation-guides used by the teaching staff in the expository classes.
• PROPOSED TASKS: with instructions for their resolution individually or in groups.
• SUPPLEMENTARY MATERIAL: for each topic such as relevant legislation, scientific articles, links to web pages with content of interest, self-assessment questionnaires, etc.
To determine the final qualification on both occasions, a follow-up of student learning will be carried out by carrying out activities, work or projects individually and/or in groups. Likewise, students will have to take a final exam with theoretical questions and problem solving that will allow individualizing the final grade.
Rating Distribution
Exam: 50% (for the evaluation of CG6, CE7 and CE11 skills)
Activities block A: 10%
Block B activities: 15%
Block C activities: 25%
Students who are granted class attendance dispensation (following Instruction No. 1/2017 of the General Secretariat on class attendance dispensation in certain circumstances), will be evaluated with a specific final exam that will mean 100% of the the note.
The criteria to be applied in the evaluation of student performance are specified in the following:
- Direct and systematic observation of the work developed in the classroom by the student.
- Assessment of the student's ability to participate in class both when formulating or answering questions and when raising and developing some type of debate related to the subject.
- Completion of a written test, to be carried out on the dates set in the official calendar of the center.
- On the other hand, during the course a series of exercises and practical cases will be proposed, in order to encourage the participation of students in class and to bring the knowledge acquired closer to the reality of business creation and management.
The evaluation system will be the same in all calls (first and second opportunity and first and successive registrations).
Students will have the right to a review of their grade in the terms provided in the regulations.
In cases of fraudulent completion of exercises or tests, the provisions of the Regulations for evaluating student academic performance and grade review will apply.

A basic level of knowledge related to economics and business is recommended and basic knowledge of computer tools such as word processors, spreadsheets and/or simulators is required. Particularly, taking into account the fundamental role that the work on the spreadsheet plays in this subject, it is advisable that the student who does not move freely in this area try to improve their management both with their personal effort and using the hours of tutorials.
It is also recommended that the student consult the extensive bibliography offered to consolidate and expand the knowledge acquired, especially in those points of the agenda in which, for reasons of timing, it is not possible to go into depth in the development of the face-to-face classes.
Teaching will be in Spanish. The USC virtual campus will be used to provide study material and work to the student and channel the delivery of work and communications with the professor. And the Excel program will be used for the explanation and putting into practice of the knowledge in which the program affects.
