Mission, Vision, and Values

Strategic Framework of iLTIUS

The iLTIUS aims to advance high-level theoretical and applied research that focuses on a broad set of ancient (Latin, Greek) and modern (German, Spanish, French, Galician, English, Portuguese) Indo-European languages, as well as on the literatures shaped by these languages, which have, in turn, functioned as tools for their codification and standardization.

The Research Institute for Linguistics and Literature at the University of Santiago de Compostela (iLTIUS) seeks to address, from a multilingual perspective, the complex historical and socio-cultural context in which the languages under study and their oral and written texts have developed and been transmitted. These constitute a cultural heritage that must be shared with contemporary society, in order to reaffirm collective identity through an understanding of the cultural values of the past.

Of particular interest to iLTIUS are those linguistic varieties and literary expressions that have emerged as a result of the geographical expansion of three global languages—Spanish, English, and Portuguese—and their interaction with diverse minoritized languages and cultures, with special emphasis on Galician language and culture.

  • Gain international recognition for the quality and impact of its research across the broad interdisciplinary domain described above, thereby becoming a hub for attracting talent.
  • Contribute to social cohesion and well-being by applying the knowledge and technologies derived from its research to meet the challenges posed by increasing globalization and multiculturalism.
  • Become a reference centre in philological research, striking a balance between specialization and transdisciplinarity, the preservation of linguistic and literary heritage, and the application of innovative methods for the dissemination of knowledge.
  • Ethics
  • Gender Equality
  • Governance
  • Scientific Education
  • Open Access
  • Citizen Engagement
  • Commitment to External Evaluation and Accountability

iLTIUS is guided by a set of core values that underpin its mission, and conducts its activities in alignment with the six pillars of Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) promoted by the European Commission: ethics, gender equality, governance, scientific education, open access, and citizen engagement. The Institute ensures that citizens are both heard and given a voice, thus aligning its outcomes with societal values, needs, and expectations.

To these pillars, iLTIUS adds a firm commitment to external evaluation and accountability, as well as a dedication to transferring the knowledge and tools generated within the Institute to society at large.
