The current library of the Faculty of Geography and History, formerly known as the "Public Library of the Royal University," was established alongside the construction of the building that now houses it. This building was designed in the late 18th century as a new university facility due to the evident lack of space caused by the growing number of students and faculty. At that time, the library was located in the area now occupied by the Paraninfo, Administration offices, and Faculty Room.
The library's furniture, which can still be admired today, was crafted by Ramón Pérez Monroy between 1785 and 1789. Monroy also made the library's first tables. Records from 1806 indicate that the library had 12 tables with a total of 46 chairs, and the maximum number of readers who could visit the library simultaneously was 80.
Around 1885, plans were made to construct a third floor in the building. Eugenio Montero Ríos appointed Daniel G. Vaamonde as the architect for the project, which began in 1894 and was completed in 1906. The main changes included relocating the library to this new floor and moving the Paraninfo, previously on the ground floor, to the first floor.
