The aim of this subject is to provide future graduates in Chemical Engineering with knowledge of the fundamentals of electrical engineering.
Particular attention will be paid to:
1.- Know the physical and mathematical foundations applied in electrical engineering and their relationship with the practical applications of electricity.
2.- Become familiar with the current regulations applicable to electrical installations, as well as basic aspects of electrical safety and risk.
3.- Identify the different elements that form part of domestic and industrial electrical installations, paying special attention to the calculation of electrical wire sections.
4.- Know the main characteristics of asynchronous electric motors and transformers, as well as the electrical switchgear used in electrical installations.
5.- Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): affordable and clean energy.
The contents (descriptors) of this subject according to the title memory are:
1. Alternating current. Single-phase and three-phase alternating current circuits.
2. Power and energy in single-phase and three-phase alternating current circuits.
3. Electrical machines. Transformers and electrical rotating machines.
4. Electrical installations: selection of electrical wires, protection of installations and personal safety.
5. Current regulations.
6. Decarbonisation of the electricity sector.
7. Electrotechnical practices: basic manoeuvre and basic automation of electric machines.

Taking these contents into account, the subject is structured in two parts, one to be developed in the classroom and the other in the laboratory:
PART I. Contents of lectures (30 hours, type "E") and seminars (14 hours, type "S").
Unit 1: Introduction to the theory of electrical circuits (5 E and 1 S).

1.4. Direct current circuits: Kirchhoff's laws, association of elements and analysis of circuits.

- Session 4. Modification of the rotation speed of a three-phase AC electric motor by means of a variable-frequency driver: Determination of stirring powers.

Part I. Master lectures and seminars:
During the master lecture lessons the explanation of theoretical contents, combined with the practical resolution of exercises, will be presented. In seminars, students will carry out practical exercises and solve problems that deepen the knowledge acquired in the lectures, as well as small evaluation tests (exercises, tests, etc.), sometimes individual and sometimes in groups, to evaluate the acquisition of the theoretical contents. Student participation will be sought and encouraged, both in the lectures and during the seminars. In addition, specific software will be used for the design of electrical installations and calculation of wire sections, delivering a team work related to the use of this software and the necessary calculations to determine the section of the electrical wires of an industrial installation.
A technical visit is planned, in collaboration with other first-year subjects, as part of the visits scheduled for the second semester of the Degree in Chemical Engineering. In this technical visit, students will be able to visualise an industrial electrical installation and its main elements (transformation centre, main and secondary electrical panels, motors, etc.).
Part II. Laboratory:
Workshops on basic wiring and automation of electrical machines. The students will work in teams of 3-4 people, assembling various circuits that integrate different power and control elements. At the end of the experimental practices, each team will deliver a report of activities.
Group tutorial:
In the hour assigned for group tutorial, an activity related to electrical installations will be carried out and a report will be delivered.
Individual tutorials requested by students, to consult doubts, will be held in person or, if necessary, electronically via MS Teams.
The Virtual Campus (Moodle) will be used for the distribution of teaching materials, test type tests and notices or delivery of activities. The use of spreadsheets and specific software for the design of electrical installations will be encouraged to solve some of the proposed problems.

The assessment will be the result of a weighted average in which the results obtained in the following activities will be taken into account:
a. Exam: 50% (obligatory).
b. Seminars and classroom participation: 20% (including technical visit which is obligatory).
c. Laboratory: 20% (obligatory).
d. Group tutorial: 10% (obligatory).
Attendance to the laboratory, technical visit and group tutorial is compulsory to pass the subject. It is essential to attend the laboratory sessions as established in the regulations of the Universidade de Santiago de Compostela, having to justify possible absences as stated in these regulations. It is recommended to attend the lectures and all seminars for a proper acquisition of the contents.
To pass the subject, a minimum mark of 40% of the maximum mark corresponding to the exam and the laboratory must be obtained, and a minimum overall mark of 5.0 must be obtained. The maximum grade that the student will obtain if he/she does not pass the minimum score in the exam or the laboratory will be 4.9, failing. The exam of the subject includes two parts, theory (30% of the overall grade of the exam) and problems (70% of the overall grade of the exam). In the theory part, the contents acquired in the classroom, the laboratory and the group tutorial will be evaluated.
Before the final exam, students will be informed of the marks obtained in the seminars, laboratory, and group tutorial. Students who completed the laboratory but did not pass the minimum of 40% of the mark corresponding to this activity may be marked again before the second chance exam.
In cases of fraudulent performance of exercises or tests, the provisions of the " Normativa de avaliación do rendemento académico dos estudiantes e de revisión das cualificacións" shall apply.

The in-class time indicates the number of hours planned for the various activities: lectures and seminars, technical visit, laboratory, group tutorial and exam. In the personal work, the hours associated with the student's activities outside the classroom were estimated. The total hours, 150 hours, are the sum of the hours of personal and classroom work and are adjusted to the corresponding 6 ECTS assigned to the subject.
It is recommended that students pass the subjects Mathematics and Physics. Class attendance is also recommended, as well as the use of the Virtual Campus of the subject (Moodle) in accordance with the above indications.
Teaching is given in Galician; sources of information in Spanish and/or English will be handled.

The admission and permanence of students enrolled in the practical laboratory requires that they know and comply with the rules included in the " Protocolo de formación básica en materia de seguridad para espacios experimentales " of the School of Engineering (ETSE), available in the safety section of its website, which can be accessed as follows:

In addition, students will be provided with a basic instruction manual, which will cover the most relevant aspects related to safety and risk prevention associated with the use of electricity.
