There is no doubt that artificial intelligence is here to stay: music recommendations tailored to your personal taste, GPS apps that inform on the status of traffic in real time, voice assistants that help perform all types of daily life tasks...

It has also landed on Campus Terra, where technology is put at the service of society thanks to the talented students at the USC Lugo faculties — and is now made visible, thanks to the IdeaLugo Award. This event, organised by the El Progreso Group, in collaboration with Abanca, the USC and Fundación CEL, has been running for seven years to reward the innovation and entrepreneurship of the Lugo Campus students.

On this occasion, the €4,000 prize went to the Peral Project, an initiative by César Abilleira and Ergin Kamberov, two students of the first class and third year of the Degree in Robotics. Artificial intelligence is the main focus of this project, applied together with big data and blockchain technology with a double purpose: on one hand, to take care of the elderly and improve their quality of life; on the other, to offer safety solutions to the food industry by having a camera network monitor the traceability of products.

The jury of the contest agreed that the works submitted reflect the society we live in: one concerned about issues related to sustainability and the environment, and interested in consuming local products. It also awarded a second prize of €1,000 to the Aobá Upcycling clothes recycling initiative, by Silvia Fernández Domínguez, a graduate in Business Administration and Management; biochemical engineer Diana Isabel Bustillos Ortiz; and fashion designer Carolina Patricia Rodeiro de Farias.

Saying goodbye to the year with great projects that revolve around the topics of digitalisation and sustainability is proof of the great commitment of Campus Terra to research in these fields and of how it adapts to the current needs of society. Surely, its impact in this sense will be even stronger in 2022.
