To provide formation about sustainable Management of forests through the appropriate tending and silvicultural operations, allowing the provision of good and services. To obtain a practice formation on the application of these treatments, their effects, costs and forecast the evolution of forest stands
The Degree Memory considers for this course the following contents: Sylvics of forest species, with enphasis in the ones represented in Northern Iberian Peninsula. Tending of forest stands. Regeneration systems and forest structure. Intensive silviculture and techniques applied. Multipurpose silviculture considering a range of management objectives.
These contents will be developed according to the following units:
Theoretical and interactive program (18 hours)
1. Introduction and definitions.
2. Silvicultural terminology
3. Sylvics of forest species
4. Stem shape and rooting architecture
5. Growth and longevity. Modes of reproduction.
6. Silvicultural analysis
7. Tending operations on the soil and crowns: weeding and respacements
8. Tending operations: pruning
9. Tending operations: thinning
11. Regeneration fellings
12. Management of slash
13. Coppice
14. Regeneration processes
15. Coppice with standards and additional forest systems
16. Intensive silviculture
17. Multipurpose silviculture
18. Fire preventive silviculture
Practical program:
Students will have two visits: forests where silvicultural treatments are being applied and a thinning operation in place
Seminars:
Seminars will be developed in IT classrooms to allow the use of simulators and other software. Three seminars to discuss practical situations will be arranged. The students will prepare a work base don bibliography available in the USC library.

A range of general and specific competences related to forest engineering will be acquired by the students. Among the competences included for the Degree Studies, the following ones will be worked on in this course:
Basic, general and transversal competences:
CG6 – Ability to measure, assess and evaluate the forest resources, apply and develop silvicultural and Management techniques of forest Systems, leisure and public areas in the forest, as well as the techniques of wooded and non-wooded forest product exploitation
CB2 – The students will know how to apply their knowledge to their work or vocation in a professional way and will have the competences to elaborate and present proposals and problem solutions within their study area
CB4 – The students will be able to convey information, ideas, problems and solutions to both a specialized or non-specialized public
Specific competences
CECF11 - Silviculture.
The teaching activity would include lectures, both expositive (16 h) and interactive (16 h), along with lab activities and field visits.
The specific methodologies to be applied are:

The assessment will be done as a combination of the following activities:
The compulsory attendance to lectures and interactive teaching sessions (unless exemption): 10%.
Written tests: 50%. Competences covered: CG6, CB2, CECF11
Field trip report and course work (tecnical documento about silvicultal practices in a forest): 30%. Competences: CG6, CB2, CECF11
Public presentation of works: 10%. Competences: CB2, CB4, CECF11
Field trip report and course work are compulsory deliverables. For the extraordinary call the marks of Field trip report and course will be kept. Students from previous years won't be able to liberate parts of the subject.
The working load of this course will be the corresponding to the 4,5 ECTS assigned: total working load estimated for the student as 112,5 h
The total working time of the student could be divided in the following activities (indicative share of each activity): Preparation of theoretical units: 40 h; exercises: 6 h; preparation of the course individual work (practical work of preparing a document on the silvicultural management of a forest stand): 24 h and study and preparation of exams: 12 h.
Students are recommended to attend the lectures and use the available time for tutorials
