The goal of this course is to get acquainted with the study cells and tissues in current biomedical research. To achieve this, one or more specific cell types will be chosen, and their biology and study methods will be studied in depth. This will help with the study of any other cell type the student may find throughout his/her career. The content of the present course does not cover the basic aspects of cell biology. Thus, the student must have basic knowledge of cell biology, either because he/she had a subject that covers the field in the degree, or because they study it independently or with the help of the teachers.
The teaching approach is from the experimental point of view, so that the student develops critical capacity with the cell biology experiments that he/she will find throughout his/her professional life, and is also able to design experiments using the techniques of this science to answer relevant scientific questions.
Experimental approach to cell biology. Common techniques used in cell biology laboratories.
Study of specific cell types, which may include endothelial cells, stem cells and organoids: experimental procedures, protocols and articles.
- Teaching will use original articles and review articles from scientific journals, and experimental protocols.
- As a supporting bibliography to review basic aspects of cell biology: Alberts B. et al. (2021) Molecular biology of the cell, 8th ed. Garland Science.
General
- Know how to apply the appropriate techniques for solving problems in Cell Biology applied to Biomedicine.
- Be able to carry out a research project on the subject, designing experiments under supervision.
- Be able to make judgments about hypotheses, experimental proposals or experiments already carried out in Cell Biology.
- Be able to work as a part of a team.
- Be able to communicate proposals, experiments, results, conclusions and criticisms.
- Be able to stay up to date in the field of cell biology and its techniques autonomously.
Specific
- Understand how alterations in biological processes that maintain balance in the cell and in the body tissues can cause human pathology.
- Develop the ability to understand the alterations and identify possible points of therapeutic intervention of any disease that may be found as an object of study in their professional career.
- Be able to design experiments in the field of cell biology, applying the appropriate techniques to answer the pertinent question.
Classes and seminars may consist of:
- Presentation by the professor of methods used in cell biology or aspects of the biology of the cell type under study.
- Presentation of tasks by students.
- Discussion of research articles and experimental protocols, both by students and by the teacher.
- Final test: Written exam: 60%.
- Continuous evaluation: 40%.
Lectures: 21 hours of teaching class and 4 hours of exam
Individual work: 50
Beyond the concepts worked in class, it is important for the student to handle the basic aspects of cell biology. Most of them are understood to have been worked on in the degrees/degrees from which they come, but it is always convenient to review and expand them. For this reason, reading and studying the recommended bibliography is recommended. The teachers of the subject are at the disposal of the students to guide them in this study.
Much of the material used for the classes is in English, so it is convenient to have the ability to at least read in this language.
It is convenient to go to classes, both theory and seminars. Also use the tutorials for any questions that may arise, or for the autonomous study of the basic aspects of cell biology that are needed.
In cases of fraudulent performance of exercises or tests, the provisions of the "Regulations for the validation of academic performance for two students and for the review of qualifications" shall apply.
