The objectives are focused on changes suffered by soils after a fire, as well as on actions to carry out in order to avoid drag of pollutants towards water bodies, and also on the structure and dynamics of plant communities after fire, the regenerative strategies of forest species in relation to the fire and restoration of burned areas in relation to natural regeneration and protection regime.
The memory of the title includes the following contents:
Urgent as well as medium and long term corrective actions. Plant communities affected by forest fires: structure and dynamics after fire, regeneration. Regenerative strategies in relation to fire. Criteria for restoring burned areas.
These contents will be developed according to the following agenda:
Theoretical program (expository classes):
- Effects of fires on soils. Urgent palliative and corrective actions to be carried out in soils affected by fires. Corrective actions for medium and long-term effects. 4 hours.
- Plant communities affected by forest fires in Spain and Galicia. Structure and dynamics of plant communities after fire. Short and medium term regeneration of its composition, structure and function. 2 hours.
- Regenerative strategies of forest species in relation to fire. Sprouting and germinating species. Types of regrowth species. Seed banks. The regenerative strategies of the Atlantic forest species. 2 hours.
-Criteria for restoring burned areas. Restoration planning in relation to the characteristics of the fire, the capacity of natural regeneration and the protection regime of the burned area. Emergency plantings of herbaceous and/or shrubs. Measures for forest and biodiversity recovery. Restoration evaluation and monitoring. 4 hours.

Practice 3: Use of specific simulation software related to the effects of fires on soils and palliative measures. 4 hours.

Basic skills:

Specific competences:
CE38 - To acquire a wide/complete training in the processes of plant regeneration after fires of different characteristics, as well as the necessary restoration tasks, both in the short and medium term (if natural recovery is not fast enough).
The classes will be taught in person, explaining the contents established in the program of the subject. The recommended hygienic measures will be taken (probably, use of hydrogel and mandatory mask when it is not possible to guarantee the minimum distance indicated). These measures will also be taken for field, laboratory, and computer room practices.
The teaching methodology consists of 9 hours of expository classes (carried out by means of presentations and audiovisual materials) and 12 hours of interactive classes (field trip, laboratory, and computer room practices), which constitute classroom teaching, compulsory for students; as well as the revision of the recommended works, and the individual effort for the realization of the reports of practices and of a course work, that constitutes the non-contact teaching.The lectures present an updated synthesis of the dynamics of recovery after fire and of the regenerative strategies of the plants, as well as the criteria and planning for the restoration of burned areas.
In the interactive practical classes there will be two laboratory and computer room practices and a field trip to a recently burned area, aimed at evaluating vegetation dynamics and regenerative strategies after fire. Attendance is compulsory, and the students will prepare a report of each of them, adjusted to the protocol proposed by the teachers.
The theoretical and practical classes will be complemented with the preparation of an individual work, which must include the review and citation of articles in English, on regeneration and restoration after fire. Each student will present the topic in writing and by oral presentation in the classroom.
The contents developed during the expository and interactive classes will be complemented with materials that will be available to students in the space reserved for this subject within the Virtual Classroom.
Attendance and participation in face-to-face teaching will be monitored.

Evaluation system
It is necessary to pass the three parts (theory, practice and course work). As indicated in the table above, the evaluation system, the competencies evaluated and the weight in the qualification are as follows:
Written or oral test /s*. Competences assessed: CB7, CB8, CB9, CB10, CE38. Rating weight: 50%.
Delivered and / or exposed works. Competences evaluated: CB8, CB9, CG2, CT3, CT4, CT5, CT6, CT7, CT8, CT9, CT10, CT11, CE38, CE 54. Weight in the qualification: 15%.
Reports delivered and / or exposed and use of the practices. Competences assessed: CB8, CB9, CT6, CT9, CT10, CE38, CE54. Rating weight: 25%.
Attendance and participation of students in face-to-face activities. Competences assessed: CT1, CT2, CE38. Rating weight: 10%.
The criteria are the same for both opportunities, the ordinary and the extraordinary recovery. They are also the same for repeating students.
*The written test may be replaced by the presentation of a work assigned by the teachers to the students. The work, which must include the review and citation of scientific articles in English, will be presented orally by the student and its evaluation will be based on the quality of its presentation and the aptitude/effectiveness of the student's responses. In this case, the weight in the qualification would be 65% (resulting sum of test/s and work delivered).
Failure to pass or not submit the work will mean taking the written test.
In the case of students with exemption of assistance, to pass this subject it is compulsory to attend the interactive activities programmed in the class schedule and according to the teaching guide. Students must appear on the officially established dates of first and/or second opportunity to take the written test on the theory content.

Reports delivered or exposed and use of the practices. Competences assessed: CB8, CB9, CT6, CT9, CT10, CE38, CE54. Rating weight: 25%.
CG7 proficiency is worked on, but not individually assessed.
In cases of fraudulent performance of exercises or tests, the provisions of the “Regulations for the evaluation of student academic performance and review of grades” will apply.
The usually needed for this kind of teaching/learning, taking into account the duration of face-to-face activities, and an additional time to reading, studying and preparing work course.
Follow-up of the teachers' instructions, both those commented in the face-to-face sessions and those corresponding to the sessions or virtual classroom.
It is recommended that students monitor the subject in the Virtual Campus, to be able to access materials from the expository and interactive classes, as well as the complementary documentation, notifications and grades.
Daily study is also recommended, in order to properly integrate the contents of the subject.
