In the theoretical part, the contents will be taught by the teachers through lectures with the support of the Virtual Classroom of the subject to provide documentation for the study (.doc and .pdf documents, .ppt presentations, videos or web links) and the self-assessment tests of the subject. The Virtual Classroom of the subject constitutes a teaching tool facilitating learning and evaluation. But it will also be used as a communication tool, with its weekly consultation being recommended.
The practical part allows the acquisition of skills and abilities related to the theoretical contents of the subject. The knowledge acquired in practical workshops/clinical practices will be applied in a practical way with the methodology of problem solving in the dental clinic with patients, in the scheduled interactive discussion and debate sessions and through the analysis of clinical cases and practical exercises. The complementary information for carrying out the practices (type and objective of the practice, instructions, brief explanatory summary, necessary materials and instruments, schedule and distribution of boxes/groups, practice assessment rubric, etc. will be shared in the Virtual Classroom prior to its completion).
In the tutorials, the teachers will attend to the students individually in person to guide them in the study of the subject and resolve the doubts and difficulties raised both in the theoretical teaching and in the practice of the subject. The tutorials are held on Tuesdays from 9:30 to 13:30 h and on Wednesdays from 18:30 to 20:30 h in the subject office located on the 1st floor (next to the seminar). The tutorials will be scheduled by appointment through the institutional email, exceptionally in justified cases they may be online through the TEAMS platform or at another date and time previously agreed upon with the students.
The expository teaching will be given in the Suárez-Núñez classroom (floor 0, Dentistry building) in a single group. The practical teaching will be carried out in the boxes of the dental clinic on the 2nd floor assigned to the 5th year of the degree, the students distributed by boxes/groups according to the practice to be carried out.
The theoretical part will be assessed through a final written test in person at the center on the date approved by the Faculty Board. This test of theoretical content will be a test type with 35 multiple-choice questions (30% of the final grade) and 5 short-answer questions (20% of the final grade). The test-type questions will have four answer options, only one of which is correct.
The assessment of the practical part will be a continuous assessment type, assessing attendance and assessment of clinical practices/practical workshops and performance of practical exercises.
Attendance at the practices is mandatory and the teaching staff will establish the form of recovery according to the type of practice not carried out.
The final grade for the subject will be the result of weighing the evaluation of theoretical (40%) and practical (60%) contents of the subject. The practical grade will be the result of the evaluation of clinical practices (45%) and practical exercises/workshops/self-assessment test (15%).
In the event that fraudulent execution of exercises or tests (plagiarism and/or improper use of technologies) is confirmed, the provisions of the “Normativa de avaliación do rendemento académico dos estudantes e de revisión de cualificacións” will apply. For the second or extraordinary call, the evaluation will have the same format as in the first call (explained above).
The student must attend all coursework activities and dedicate 10 hours to studying the topics presented in the lectures. Approximately 25 hours must be devoted to preparing for interactive/practical sessions and approximately 5 hours must be devoted to reading recommended texts and documents or completing practical exercises.
Previous subjects with clinical practices is a very important recommendation however is not prerequisite in the grade memory to study the subject. Students are encouraged to attend and actively participate in theoretical and practical classes, to review previously on the theoretical aspects discussed in the previous expository and interactive sessions and to use the virtual campus of the subject.
During the academic year it is recommended to consult weekly the institutional e-mail (@ rai.usc.es) and the Virtual Campus of the subject to participate in the sessions of Teams and webtutorías and to carry out the indicated tasks which will allow the control and monitoring of active participation for the final evaluation.
It is recommended that students who observe difficulties learning the subject or have doubts that make it difficult to understand or assimilate the contents request a face-to-face tutoring session in order to monitor their progress individually and improve their use.
It is advisable to have previous computer and office knowledge.
The communication between faculty and students will be via USC's institutional email (rai [at] usc.es (rai[at]usc[dot]es)) and the subject's Virtual Classroom notification system. The students can also use the telephone or videoconference (TEAMS platform) to contact faculty when in-person attendance is not possible or immediate communication is required. The faculty's email address and office telephone number (located on the 1st floor of the Dentistry building) can be found in the subject information section on the USC website or in the USC institutional directory.
