Ethical principles and responsible research

As established in the European Charter, the activities of people engaged in research must be governed by ethical principles and be subject to the highest professional responsibility. Likewise, the contracting entities, such as the USC, must create the conditions for the effective application of good research practices and establish the appropriate control mechanisms to guarantee them.

Research professionals and institutions must also ensure that their work serves the interests and needs of society, and that their results are accessible (Open Access) to other researchers and to all citizens.

The basic ethical principles that research activity must ensure, in its development and aims, are respect for the dignity of human beings, and their freedom of choice, protection of their personal data (privacy and confidentiality), animal welfare and the preservation of the environment.

USC is committed to these principles, through its Social Responsibility Policy, with sustainable development, gender equality, development cooperation and the promotion of social interest initiatives. All of this is framed within USC's ethical commitment to society and to the entire university community, to work according to the principles of freedom, justice, efficiency, responsibility and respect, as stated in its Code of Ethics.
