The main objective of the subject must be the analysis and design of chemical processes, taking into account not only the raw materials involved and the products obtained in them, but also the detailed description of the process itself and the analysis of its fundamental variables. In this matter, a detailed study of some chemical and energetic processes will be carried out. It is necessary for the student to understand the importance and necessity that industrial processes must be safe, environmentally sustainable and economically profitable.
The contents are developed in 4.5 ECTS and are succinctly contemplated in the descriptor of the subject in the curriculum of the Degree in Chemical Engineering, and are: Analysis and design of chemical processes. Process Engineering Strategy. Process integration. Valorization and transformation of raw materials and energy resources. Detailed study of some chemical and energy processes.
Taking into account the descriptors indicated above, the program of the subject will be structured as follows:
Unit 1.- General aspects of industrial chemistry
Unit 2.- Analysis and design of manufacturing processes. Structure and synthesis of process flow diagrams.
Unit 3.- Heuristics for process synthesis
Unit 4.- Introduction to the detailed synthesis of processes: synthesis of separation sequences, introduction to mass networks and of heat exchangers networks.
Unit 5.- Economic analysis of chemical processes
Unit 6.- Safety in industrial processes. Risk analysis methods.

The course consists of 4.5 credits, allocated 28 hours to teach master classes, 9 hours for seminars and 1 hour of group tutoring.
*The master class will be used to develop much of the agenda. Before starting with a topic, the teacher will describe the contents in a generic way, relating them to each other and to previous topics so that the students appreciate its importance. At the end of the topic, a small balance will be made of what has been seen, focusing on the aspects that may present the most difficulties to the student.
*The seminar classes will be basically dedicated to solving problems and proposing cases related to theoretical concepts. The use of computer tools and spreadsheets for problem solving will be encouraged. Group tutoring will be used for the presentation and defense of group work carried out throughout the semester.
*Learning management system (LMS), Moodle, will be used as a tool to provide information / announcements about the teaching activity throughout the course and complementary materials for the study of the subject.
Both in the master classes and in the seminars, it will try to raise real issues and questions to generate interest and clarify concepts. Different activities will be proposed throughout the development of the subject that will be associated with the delivery through the learning management system (LMS) of written documents or the performance of oral sessions (face-to-face or telematic), evaluable in both cases.
Compulsory group work will be carried out, which will consist of the analysis and design of an industrial process. The work will be presented and defended in the group tutoring.
- Competences associated with the methodology used:
Expository classes: CG.4, CQ.1.6, CQ.2.1, CI.9, CG.3, CG.7 and CQ.2.2.
Seminar classes: CT.1, CT.5, CT.13, CG.7, CQ.2.2 and CT.4
Group work and tutoring: CG.4, CG.7, CT.1 and CT.2
Students' learning will be monitored through activities, assignments, or problem solving individually and / or by group. Also, students will take an exam with theoretical questions and problem solving that will allow individualizing the final grade.
Rating distribution *
Theoretical-practical exam: 65% of the final grade
Homework delivery: 15% of the final grade
Group work : 15% of the final grade
Tutorials / Teacher Report: 5% of the final grade
* A minimum of 3 out of 10 will be required in each of the evaluable parts to pass the subject. If the 5 points in the final mark are reached without fulfilling any of the partial minimums, the final mark will become that of the section in which the said minimum has not been reached.
Evaluation of activities and competences
