Specific objectives:
- Understand the physiology of the immune system as well as molecular and cellular components.
- Know the basic mechanisms of recognition and effector mechanisms of innate and adaptive immune response.
- Know and understand the role of the immune system defending the body against infection with different pathogens. Understand the immune system relation with cancer processes in transplant rejection and allergic process.
- Know the therapeutic uses of action on the immune system and the ability to manipulate the immune response.
The program of lectures is:
1. Introduction to immunology. Components of the immune system. Leukocyte trafficking.
2. Innate Immunity: Phagocytes and their receptors. Complement, its ligands and its receptors.
3. Antibodies, their ligands and their receptors.
4. B lymphocytes and their receptor for antigen.
5. The generation of the diversity of B and T lymphocytes.
6. Histocompatibility molecules: ligands and receptors.
7. Presentation of antigens to T lymphocytes.
8. T lymphocytes and their receptor for antigen.
9. The generation of the restricted repertoire of T lymphocytes.
10. The generation of effector T and B lymphocytes.
11. Immunological messaging: cytokines and their receptors.
12. Immunity in action against viruses, bacteria, fungi and parasites.
Topic 11, 12 will take 1 hour, topic 1 and 2 will take 4 hours, and the rest of the topics will last 2 hours.
In the laboratory practices (9h), the proposed experiments are conceptually correlative to the theoretical topics of the subject. The students will have to carry out a series of experimental tests, collect the results obtained and analyze them properly to answer the questions and exercises set out in the practice script. The internship program will be carried out in person / virtual according to the scenarios, it is: Recognition of the component cells of the immune system and determination of cell viability. Determination and study of lymphocyte subpopulations by Flow Cytometry.
In the interactive seminar classes, a 2-hour seminar will be held and applied questions and / or clinical cases will be asked of the knowledge developed in the lecture classes.
The tutorials (4h) will be oriented to the resolution of the particular doubts generated in the lectures and their application in pathological cases and / or their therapy.

In this subject the student will acquire and practice basic/general, transverse and specific compentencies:
Basic/General Competences:
They are the ones that appear in the degree report (CB1, CB2, CB3, CB4, CB5, CG1, CG2, CG3, CG4, CG5).
Cross-curricular competences competences.
CT1 - Capacity for analysis and synthesis.
CT2 - Capacity for reasoning and argumentation.
CT3 - Capacity to work in group.
CT4 - Capacity to use adequate, diverse and updated information.
CT5 - Ability to develop and present an organized and understandable text.
CT7 - Compromise veracity of the information .
CT8 - Ability in the management of ICTs.
CT9 - Use of bibliographic resources and Internet information.
CT11 - Ability to solve problems by means of the implementation of an integrated knowledge management.
Specific Competences
CE1.c - Area of competence: Instrumental knowledge and abilities. Basic techniques in Biology.
CE7.To - Area of competence: Biotechnology and biomedicine: biological basis of diseases.
CE7.b - Area of competencel: Biotechnology and biomedicine: biological basis of immunology.
The subject is designed to enhance the active learning of students. The individual study will be carried out on the basis of organized and detailed information provided by the teaching staff. The basis for such information will be the recommended basic bibliography, which will be supplemented, where necessary, with additional information.
In reference to the lectures, they are conceived as general introductions to each topic, which will be complemented with the rest of the proposed activities. These activities are: individual study, resolution of questions, preparation of activities proposed in seminars. They will be developed in person in the classroom, attending to all the doubts and clarifications raised by the students. The help material prepared to facilitate the monitoring and understanding of the topics (which includes a summary of the topics explained and the necessary complementary material) is provided in the virtual campus of the USC corresponding to the subject.
The laboratory practices are organized in several sessions where the theoretical contents are applied, through the observation and handling of biological material, instruments, etc., following the protocols prepared for this purpose by the teaching staff.
The tutorials are conceived as a means of coordinating and guiding the individual work of the students.
In the interactive seminar classes, they will be developed in the classroom where applications of the theory will be proposed and solved, exercises, problems, simulations of clinical cases, etc. will be done (PBL problem-based learning). Active participation of the students is required. It is programmed to provide them with information and complementary material (videos, web addresses, etc.) that will allow them a better understanding of the matter.
The interactive laboratory classes will be compulsory in person in the laboratory.
The methodological approach aims to know the progress of their learning and carry out their assessment. The evaluation of the subject will consist of a continuous assessment. The evaluation modality will be continuous and will be face-to-face. The evaluation will be the same for repeaters and non-repeaters, not keeping notes from previous years. In addition, the evaluation will always be the same on both occasions.
The evaluation of the subject will consist of the following qualifications of the parts into which the subject is divided:
Continuous Assessment: Attitude will be taken into account and questions about the content developed in the lectures and / or interactive classes or related topics will be taken into account, qualifying with up to 10% of the total grade for the subject, it is an optional activity that can be evaluated
Interactive laboratory classes: Attitude will be taken into account and a report will be prepared in which the results and their justification are presented and analyzed, it will be scored with up to 10% of the final grade, it is an optional compulsory activity.
Final test: There will be a final test on the subject developed throughout the course (lectures, seminars, etc.). The grade will be up to 80% of the final grade, it is an assessable compulsory activity.
Regarding the evaluation of competences, they are evaluated as follows:
Practice work: CT1, CT2, CT4, CT5, CT7, CT9, CT11 CE1.c, CE7.a, CE7.b
Continuous assessment: CT1, CT2, CT4, CT5, CT7, CT8, CT9, CT11, CE7.a, CE7.b
classroom hours:
26 hours expository classes
4.5 hours of interactive laboratory classes
2 hours of interactive seminar classes
2 hours of exam preparation.
Non-contact hours:
59.5 hours of dedication to individual study and preparation of the subject
10 hours of elaboration of the memory of practices
The study of the subject in the three scenarios is recommended to be done:Use of recommended readings and the material provided by the teacher, essential for the understanding of matter. Frequent reading and reflection on the subject taught, necessary for the integration of knowledge in this field of science. Interest and attention on new developments in this discipline disseminated through the media, for inclusion and discussion in classes and seminars.
The subject will have a virtual classroom on the Moodle platform. Communication with students will be done through email, the Moodle platform and / or through the MS-teams application.
“For cases of fraudulent performance of exercises or tests, the provisions of the regulations for the evaluation of the academic performance of students and the review of grades will apply.” This indicates that the fraudulent performance of any exercise or test required in the evaluation will imply the failing grade in the corresponding call, regardless of the disciplinary process that may be followed against the offending student. Considering fraudulent, among others, the completion of plagiarized work (for example, from classmates or previous courses) or obtained from sources accessible to the public without reworking or reinterpretation and without citations to the authors and sources. The distribution by different means (for example, web pages) and without the teacher's consent, of any teaching material posted in the classroom is also strictly prohibited.
