1. General
- To introduce students into the world of second language acquisition and learning.
- To make connections between linguistic theory and pedagogical practice.
- To reflect upon the factors influencing second language learning and language teaching.
- To familiarise students with the main literature in the field.
- To reflect upon general and individual factors and variables that condition the learning of English and the learning of a second language in broad terms.
- To acquaint students with basic terminology on the different topic areas of the course.
2. Specific
- To study language learning theories as well as the different variables and factors conditioning the language learning process.
- To examine the similarities and differences between first language acquisition (FLA) and second language learning (SLA).
- To compare and contrast second language acquisition/learning and second language teaching.
- To examine the role of new technologies in the teaching of English.
- To familiarise learners with the most recent European developments on the teaching and learning of languages: the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) and the European Language Portfolio (ELP)
- To provide students with basic theoretical principles and practical techniques for their own development as future English language teachers.
- To introduce students to second language acquisition research.
This outline is merely orientative and it can be modified according to the students' ongoing needs and interests.

G01- Ability to delve into those concepts, principles, theories or models related to the various areas of English Studies, as well as to become familiar with the methodology required to solve those problems typical of this field of study.
G02 Ability to apply the knowledge gained/obtained within the multidisciplinary and mutifaceted/versatile area of English Studies.
G03- Ability to use the new information and communication technologies (ICTs) efficiently within the realm of English Studies.
G04- Ability to present experiences, ideas or reports in public, as well as to express informed opinions based on criteria, external rules or personal reflections, for which a sufficient command of the academic and scientific language, both written and oral, will be necessary.
G05- Abilities to investigate and manage new knowledge and information within the context of English Studies.
G06- Ability to acquire/achieve critical thinking that will lead students to consider the relevance of the existing research in the fields of study that make up/shape/define English Studies, as well as the relevance of their own investigations.
G07 - Abilities to consolidate and develop the C2 linguistic competence in the spoken and written use of the English language.

G09 - Ability to carry out research work of an academic nature in the different realms of English Studies.
G10 - Ability to present and defend a research project by making use of the appropriate terminology and resources/tools within the area object of study.

This course is very practical. English will be used throughout. Class attendance and active participation are a requirement. Lectures will alternate with seminars and group discussions. Some practical sessions may be conducted in the computer lab.
Additional materials for the different units of the course will be available through the e-learning platform.

Attendance and active participation in class: up to 20%
Practical tasks, oral presentations and tests: 80%
Those students who do not pass in June will be required to sit a final exam in July. This also applies to those students who were granted special permission from the Faculty authorities not to attend lessons regularly and to those who did not pass the course the previous year.
Note: Notable (8) will be the highest grade granted to students who hold permission not to attend lessons.
On a tentative and orientative basis, the distribution of the student's work and study activities will be as follows:
- Regular tutorials: 2 hours
- Controlled readings through the virtual platform: 4 hours
- Participation in the virtual platform forums and debates: 4 hours
- Self-evaluation tasks through the virtual platform: 2 hours
- Individual and group autonomous work through the virtual platform: 11 hours
- Assignments: 20 hours
- Tasks conducted in the library, recommended readings and bibliographical searches: 20 hours
Class attendance and active participation are a requirement. Students should try to keep up to date with class work and carry out different projects and practical tasks.
We recommend students to devote 8-10 hours a week to the study of the subject (here we include the time spent on the preparation of tasks, projects and tests).
