Mentions to the title

Degree mentions are honorary qualifications that are included in your PhD degree provided you meet a series of specific formal and academic requirements. There are three types of mentions: Industrial Doctorate Mention, International Doctorate Mention, and Joint Thesis Mention (cotutelle/co-supervision).

EDIUS and the program's academic committees evaluate compliance with these requirements as stipulated in the regulations.

For more information, please review Articles 38, 39, and 40 of the Doctoral Studies Regulations.

Types of mentions

In order for a doctoral thesis to obtain an International Doctorate mention it must meet the following requirements:

  1. Research stays abroad:
During the doctoral training, the researcher must carry out one or more stays outside Spain, in one or more higher education institutions or prestigious research centers, for a minimum total time of three months.
    • Stays in the country of residence, nationality, where they work or where they carried out the studies that gave them access to the doctoral studies are not counted.
    • If several stays are carried out, at least one must last at least one month and none less than seven days.
    • Stays must be endorsed by the thesis supervisor and authorized by the CAPD prior to their completion.
  2. Writing the thesis in a foreign language:
At least 25% of the thesis must be written in a scientific language relevant to the field of knowledge of the thesis (other than the official languages of Spain), or in the language of the country where the stay (or most of the stays) took place.
    • This 25% must include chapters or complete blocks of the thesis, as well as the summary and conclusions.
    • Indexes, bibliography and annexes of the thesis do not count for this percentage.
  3. Defense in a foreign language:
No acto de defensa, un mínimo dun 25 % da exposición oral debe realizarse na mesma lingua estranxeira mencionada anteriormente (lingua científica de relevancia ou do país onde se fixo a estadía ou maioría das estadías). Esta regra non se aplica cando as estadías, os informes e as persoas externas que avalíen a tese sexan de países hispanofalantes.
    • In the defense, a minimum of 25 % of the oral presentation must be in the same foreign language mentioned above (relevant scientific language or language of the country where the stay or majority of stays took place).
    • This rule does not apply when the stays, reports and external people evaluating the thesis are from Spanish-speaking countries.
  4. External reports:
    • Two expert doctors from institutions outside Spain must issue a favorable report on the thesis.
    • These people cannot be the ones who supervised the stays. The doctoral program manages the process of requesting external reports. External evaluators may be part of the committee if the program so establishes.
  5. International members of the Examining Committee:
At least one doctor who belongs to a foreign research center, other than the supervisor of the stay, must be part of the thesis examining committee.

  6. Documentation to be submitted when you apply for thesis defense:
    • Certificate(s) certifying the stay(s) signed by the tutor(s) at the foreign center/institution and/or by the person responsible for its management.
    • Copy of the prior authorization for the stay by the CAPD of your program, endorsed by the thesis supervisor.
