After studying this subject, the student will master the fundamental principles of photonic devices based on semiconductors. Among other aspects, the student will know:
- Types of structures consisting of semiconductors (such as p-n junctions and quantum structures) and their properties.
- The temporal, spatial and spectral behavior of the light emitted by LEDs and laser diodes, as well as its properties at a quantum level (statistics of the emitted photons).
- Light detection methods based on semiconductors with special attention to single photon detectors (avalanche photodiodes [APD] and EMCCD cameras).
1. Fundamentals of radiometry and photometry
2. Physical principles of semiconductors
3. Light emitting Diodes: LEDs
4. Laser diodes
5. Photo-Detectors: photodiodes and image sensors

CB7 - Knowledge about how to apply the knowledge acquired and their ability to solve problems in new or unfamiliar environments within broader (or multidisciplinary) contexts related to their area of study
CB9 - Ability to communicate conclusions and the knowledge and ultimate reasons that sustain them to specialized and non-specialized audiences in a clear and unambiguous way
CB10 - Learning skills allowing to continue studying in a way that will be largely self-directed or autonomous.
CT01 - Ability to interpret texts, documentation, reports and academic articles in English, scientific language par excellence.
CT02 - Develop the capacity to make responsible decisions in complex and / or responsible situations.
Master in Quantum Information Science and Technologies
CON_06 - Acquire knowledge about physical systems capable of implementing information processing in quantum degrees of freedom.
CON_07 - Have knowledge of quantum optics and the role and properties of light and its manipulation in information processing and quantum communications.
Skills: HD0, HD1, HD2, HD3
CE6 - Know and understand the nature of the physical platforms for the processing of quantum information in photonic systems: quantum optics, integrated optical systems, opto-atomic systems, detection and measurement systems, semiconductor photonics.
Learning outcomes:
This subject provides the foundations of the photonic properties of semiconductor materials and devices. Among others, quasi-classical light emitting devices such as lasers (coherent state) and quantum devices such as quantum dot LEDs (single photon) or the generation of SPDC (bi-photon states, ...) will be studied. Quantum light detectors will also be studied for both temporal measurements (single photon avalanche photodiode or SPAD) and spatial measurements (EMCCD image sensors). Both the sources and the detectors will be presented both in their volume version (3D) and in their integrated photonics version when appropriate, the latter due to their high interest in emerging technologies.
The theory classes will be dedicated to the explanation of the contents of the subject following a format of master class, although the participation of the students will be encouraged. The seminar classes will be used to solve problems related to the contents presented in previous classes and for the presentation of individual works proposed by the teacher.
It will be made available to the students teaching material of the subject in the Virtual Campus.
The evaluation of the students' learning will be based on:
The realization of works in non-classroom hours 35%
Presentation of such works 25%
Resolution of practical exercises in the classroom that will be considered as partial exams 20%
Active and positive involvement during the in-person classes 20%
In cases of fraudulent completion of exercises or tests, the provisions of the "Regulations for the evaluation of the academic performance of students and for the review of grades" will apply:
The fraudulent performance of any exercise or test required in the evaluation of a subject will imply a failure grade in the corresponding call, regardless of the disciplinary process that may be followed against the offending student. It will be considered fraudulent, among others, the realization of plagiarized works or obtained from sources accessible to the public without reworking or reinterpretation and without citations to the authors and the sources.
