The main aim of this course is to offer an overview, and therefore necessarily a selective view, of selected electronic lexicographic resources of some Romance languages.
The principal aims are listed below:
i. To provide a basic knowledge of electronic lexicography
ii. To introduce the metalexicographic aspects of e-lexicography and typology: through examples of some selected Romance languages (structure of the dictionary, purpose, relationship with other disciplines, production methods, etc.).
iii. Presentation of an overview of monolingual, bilingual and multilingual electronic lexicography of several Romance languages.
iv. Promote research skills and critical use of lexicographical information according to the user's profile and situation
v. Raising awareness of the need for specific lexicographic methodology and didactics in the digital space.
vi. Promote interest in e-lexicography.
Of particular interest is the presentation of the inventory of various electronic reference works, portals, platforms and electronic tools, as well as a discussion of the different procedures, methods and metalexicographic concepts that underlie them. The topic will be treated with special consideration of the potential users of these resources and the different usage situations. In addition, current developments in language technology will be outlined, which influence the current and future use of lexicographic resources and tools in the digital space.
The central contents of the course are as follows:
1 Introduction
1.1 What is e-lexicography? Typology and typical characteristics
1.2 Corpora as a lexicographic data base
1.3 User situations and the role of different actors (users, lexicographers etc.)
2. Overview of monolingual, bilingual and multilingual electronic resources in Romance languages: Spanish, Portuguese, French, etc.
2.1 Learner's dictionaries
2.2 General language dictionaries
2.3. Specific paradigmatic and syntagmatic dictionaries
2.4. Dictionaries for specific proposes
2.5. Others
3. Resource platforms
3.1 Lexicographic portals and integrated resource platforms (e.g. Rilga)
3.2 Other tools with resource integration: Wordnet (Galnet), Babelnet etc.
4. Collaborative dictionaries
Examples (Wikipedia) and collaborative dictionary editing/production (e.g. MediaWiki, LanguageForge, Lexonomy)
5. Dictionaries and their application-oriented use in the digital space
5.1 Lexicographical competence in various areas of applied linguistics (research, language teaching/learning, translation, etc.).

Knowledge and contents:
Con01: Identify and differentiate the different theoretical and applied approaches in electronic lexicography and recognise their evolution.
Con02: Knowing and understanding the fundamental concepts and research methods in electronic lexicography.
Con03: Compare typologies of resources, lexicographic tools and digital information systems. Identify the typology of dictionaries and electronic resources of Romance languages and their fields of application.
Con04: Know lexicographic sources for the study of lexicography and lexical analysis. use different types of electronic resources to solve lexicographic, theoretical, typological, methodological, etc. problems.
Abilities or skills:
H/D02: Select and critically analyse sources of scientific documentation for the theoretical-practical study of electronic lexicography and lexical analysis.
H/D04: Analyse and develop critical studies on theoretical and applied issues linked to electronic lexicography and its applications. critically approach the current state of e-lexicography of Romance languages.
H/D05: Select and use different methods, digital tools and information systems for data analysis and visualisation. apply new methods and techniques in lexicographic studies.
Competences:
Comp01: Know how to use theoretical-practical knowledge related to lexicography or lexicographical practice in academic and/or professional environments identify and critically analyse the added value of an electronic dictionary versus a printed one.
Comp05: Solve problems linked to theoretical and practical lexicography in multidisciplinary and multilingual contexts.
Expository lecture lessons, short seminars and interactive seminar lessons with applied practical tasks (debates, assignments, presentations, etc.) are combined. These can be organised as face-to-face classes and/or virtually. Regular and active participation of students in all proposed activities is essential for adequate progress.
The USC institutional working/learning platform (Aula virtual/Virtual classroom) will be activated for the course. Course participants are expected to familiarise themselves with this platform from the beginning of the course and to participate in the various activities offered!
The lessons will be held in German and English.
Other languages such as Spanish, French, Italian will be used for support if necessary.
First evaluation date (= "primera oportunidad")
50%: Evaluation of continuous work, active participation in class and realisation of the exercise tasks, homework and a presentation (on a topic agreed with the lecturer) etc.
50%: Preparation of a written homework (submission date and topic will be arranged with the lecturer) approx. 20 pages).
Second evaluation date (= "segunda oportunidad")

Students who are exempt from attending classes and students who are repeating the subject and cannot/can hardly attend classes:
100%: written assignment and oral presentation (approx. 40 pages).

Regular course attendance, continuous work and the use of the recommended learning resources are recommended. Students are expected to:
- Active and regular participation in class (present and/or virtual).
- Realisation of the different tasks (individually / in working groups) etc.
- Pre- and post-processing of the lessons
- Reception of the recommended bibliography and further materials (videos etc.)

Teaching methodology:
(i) If the teaching is only partially presentable, both forms of teaching (presentable and digital) will be combined depending on the specific situation.
(ii) In the event of a lockdown, teaching will take place digitally, using both synchronous and asynchronous forms.
Certificates of achievement:
Both in the case of face-to-face teaching and in the case of digital teaching, the evaluation of the different activities (e.g. active participation in class) will be assessed by formulas adapted to the situation (e.g. participation in face-to-face teaching and/or virtual sessions and in (digital) discussions, submission of assignments, etc.).
