After attending this module, students should
• have acquired an overview of the history and essential characteristics of learner lexicography
• have developed the ability to evaluate existent learner’s dictionaries critically
• have acquired detailed knowledge of problem areas in the writing of learner’s dictionaries
• have learned to apply up-to-date technologies to the writing of learner’s dictionaries
• have achieved an awareness of pedagogical problem areas of dictionary usage and have acquired the ability to develop and write pedagogical material to accompany learner’s dictionaries
1. Historical overview of English and German learner lexicography
2. Users and usage of learner’s dictionaries (dictionary users, situations of usage, learners’ proficiency levels)
3. Types of learner’s dictionary (general and encyclopedic; monolingual, bilingual; bilingualised learner’s dictionaries; specialised dictionaries as learner’s dictionaries)
4. Microstructures, macrostructures, mediostructures, functions of learner’s dictionaries
5. Principles underlying the writing of learner’s dictionaries (user-friendliness (retrievability and understandability of content), corpus-basedness (methods of data retrieval, authenticity, frequency, basic vocabulary), combined transmission of linguistic and encyclopedic knowledge (cultural knowledge, encyclopedic learner’s dictionaries))
6. Production of learner’s dictionaries: explanation of meaning (definitions, defining vocabulary, defining syntax, problems of lexicographical examples, non-verbal explanations)
7. Intermediality in learner lexicography: use of modern media technology (hypermedial structures, audio-visual material/texts/exercises, extensive cross-referencing links)
8. Lexicographical pedagogy (dictionaries in (foreign) language learning, learners’ potential, dictionary usage strategies, dictionary usage exercises and accompanying material)

Block seminar (date and duration will be announced)
1. Opportunity:
The teachers choose one of the following:
a) 90-minute final exam on the contents of the seminar
or
b) presentation in class plus a brief paper (10-15 pages)
or
c) longer paper (15-20 pages)
2. Opportunity: The assessment on the second opportunity will be based on the same criteria.
For students who are officially exempt from attending the assessment system will be the same as for the rest.
Academic misconduct (cheating, plagiarism in exercises or tests) will be penalized according to the University regulations on student assessment (“Normativa de avaliación do rendemento académico dos estudantes e de revisión de cualificacións”)
