We seek that students:
- Have an overall knowledge of the History of Brazil.
- Establish some concepts of Culture, Popular and Erudite Culture.
- Determine features of the formation of National Identity.
- Study the races which formed the Brazilian Nation, constituting elements of brasilidade (Brazilian national spirit), Brazil in the second half of the 20th century.
- Know the Brazilian culture in all possible aspects.
- Interpret Brazilian reality.
I – Some concepts of Culture.
Popular Culture and Erudite Culture.
Problems of identification and characterization of the Brazilian Culture.
National Culture and Identity.
II – Races which formed the nation:
II.1 – The indian.
The Indian in literary and historic texts.
Mystification of the Indian.
The indigenous question in the 20th century.
II.2 – The black.
The “escravocrata” (slavery) question and the representation of the black in society up to the 19th century: Castro Alves & Machado de Assis.
The black in the contemporary Brazilian society: awareness movements.
II.3 – Construction of the “brasileiro” (Brazilian).
Problem of races at the end of the century.
Development of sciences.
Of the need of one interpretative theory of the Brazilian reality.
II.4 – The “Brasilidade” (Brazilian national spirit) in the literary expression; other artistic expressions.
III – The industrialization process: a new concept of cannibalism.
European immigration: the question of the “caipira”: the question of language versus other languages.
IV – Contemporary Brazil.
Formation of the Brazilian thinking; symbolic construction of the “operariado” (proletariat); artistic manifestations; mass culture.

- To analyze the Brazilian reality in its historical moments and also in the present time.
- To elaborate concepts on culture, popular and erudite culture and, also, on national culture and identity.
- To read and interpret texts which explore issues concerning: Indian, black, construction of the “brasileiro” (Brazilian)
- To elaborate questions concerning the “brasilidade” and related issues and know how to answer them.
- To analyze the Brazilian reality in its historical moments and also in the present time.
- Continuous evaluation: class attendance and participation will be taken into account. And final evaluation on the official date scheduled by the Faculty.
- Written exam.
- Written work assignment (previously indicated by the teacher on one of the two items of the programme).
- Oral presentation of the written work.
- Research (according to the student’s judgement) on one topic regarding the programme contents.
- Several hours devoted to the previous readings of the texts indicated for the classes.
- The workload time of the discipline.
- Several hours devoted to the research of the topics developed in the classes.
- Class participation.
- Previous readings of the texts.
- Use of the tutorial timetable of the teacher to solve possible doubts.
- Optional research for a better learning of the contents developed.
In the course of the term (four-month period), new information/texts/references will be provided to students as complement and updating of topics concerning the discipline.
