By the end of this module students should be able to
- know the needs of dictionary users
- distinguish the components of dictionaries
– know lexicographic data
- receive an overview of the various dictionary types, but also of possibilities of classifying them
- know the development of the subject and the relations to the society as a whole and to culture
- know the main features of the discipline in theory and practice
- enhance communication with their fellow students
• User needs: Who needs dictionaries?
• What is a dictionary? Components.
• Dictionary entries: Lexicographic data: Repetition of basics concerning phonetics, phonology, morphology, word formation, syntax, semantics, pragmatics.
• Dictionary typologies
• Historical aspects of lexicography, motivation of the society as a whole – relation to cultural science and social science
• What is lexicography and dictionary research?
• Relation to linguistics and to other sciences
• Basics of computational lexicography

For students who are officially exempt from attending the assessment system will be the same as for the rest.
Academic misconduct (cheating, plagiarism in exercises or tests) will be penalized according to the University regulations on student assessment (“Normativa de avaliación do rendemento académico dos estudantes e de revisión de cualificacións”).
Attendance: max. 56 hours, with additional autonomous work time.
•Students are encouraged to participate actively and regularly through the learning platform, to revise and to complete their notes, to read the bibliography and to use the digital resources.
