Career Opportunities

The professional figure of the Social Worker is recognised at state level in the Resolution of 23 April 2013 which takes into account the reference catalogue of social services.

The common criteria for quality in the provision of services establish that people who access the Public Social Services System will have a professional of reference, who will be a Social Worker.

The Social Work professional is a key figure in the Social Services System and is also present in a very relevant way in the Dependency Care System or in the Health System.

The law that regulates the Social Services of Galicia establishes that "the professional person of reference will preferably be a worker or a social worker from the public network of social services" (Art. 24).  At municipal level, the norm that regulates community social services also states that "the professional person of reference shall be a social worker" (Art. 37).

The outstanding role that the Galician Social Inclusion Law assigns to the Social Worker is reflected in the requirement for the issue of a "social report carried out by the worker or social worker of reference, which will contain an assessment of the situation or risk of social exclusion and a proposal on the suitability of the application of the benefit" (Art. 36).

In other areas of specialised care, the figure of the Social Worker is also taken into account, forming part of interprofessional teams, for example in juvenile courts, prison social services, family guidance offices, etc.

Graduates in Social Work carry out their professional work in various fields and areas related to Social Services and other Social Welfare systems, and every day increase their presence in social initiative entities and private companies.

The great variety of services and institutions where they work characterises the current situation. Thus, they carry out their activity in Community and Healthcare Social Services, in specialised units and centres for the elderly, disabled, drug addicts, unprotected minors, women victims of gender violence, etc., and also in the Autonomous Administration, in Provincial Councils, hospitals or penitentiary institutions.
