This activity aims to raise awareness about dementia, promote conversation, diversify perspectives on the subject, empower people living with dementia and their carers, and encourage the involvement of future professionals who will care for dementia from a multidisciplinary perspective.
Walking the Talk for Dementia is promoted by the Global Brain Health Institute of Trinity College Dublin and is organised by the Federación Alzheimer Galicia (Galician Alzheimer Federation) and the Sociedad Gallega de Neurología (Galician Society of Neurology), with the participation of the University Master's Degree in Psychogerontology of the USC and the USC-Red Cross Chair in Quality of Life in Ageing.
Dates held: From 1 to 6 May 2023
The experience includes four days of Camino de Santiago to Compostela (1 to 4 May) and two days of scientific symposium (5 and 6 May), which will take place at the Hotel Monumento Sano Francisco.
Day 1
Monday 1/05/2023, (10.00 a.m. - 5.00 p.m.)
- Completion of the first stage of the Camino de Santiago (15 km between Sarria and Portomarín).
- Goals: introductions and start of the cohabitation. Accompanying the different participants and initiating interactions and conversations with them. Contact with people with dementia and carers.
Day 2
Tuesday 2/05/2023, (10.00 a.m. - 5.00 p.m.)
- Completion of the second stage of the Camino de Santiago (15 km between Palas de Rei and Melide).
- Goals: continuation of the discussions among the participants. Record of the most important issues discussed during the walk. Facilitation of conversations and participation of people with dementia.
Day 3
Wednesday 03/05/2023, (10.00 a.m. - 5.00 p.m.)
- Completion of the third stage of the Camino de Santiago (15 km between Arzúa and Pedrouzo)
- Goals: continuation of the discussions between the participants. Record of the most important issues discussed during the walk. Facilitation of conversations and participation of people with dementia.
Day 4
Thursday 04/05/2023, (10.00 a.m. - 5.00 p.m.)
- Completion of the last stage of the Camino de Santiago (15 km between Pedrouzo and Santiago).
- Goals: continuation of the discussions among the participants. Record of the most important issues discussed during the walk. Facilitation of conversations and participation of people with dementia. Final meeting with the Federación Alzheimer Galicia and joint arrival. Closing of the Camino experience and celebration.
Day 5 (Symposium)
Friday 05/05/2023, (1.00 p.m. - 7.00 p.m.
- Topics: Diagnosis, pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment of dementia. Medical, social, psychological and socio-economic perspectives.
- Goals: to conduct a debate where everyone can participate with respect to these aspects of dementia, where opinions are exchanged between scientific experts, managers, therapists and where patients have a voice of their own.
Day 6 (Symposium)
Saturday 06/05/2023, (9.30 a.m. - 12.00 p.m. and 2.30 p.m. - 7.00 p.m.)
- Topics: Research. Prevention of dementia, its social perspective as well as that of the media. Ableism and ageism. Medical, social, psychological and socio-economic perspectives.
- Goals: To conduct a debate where everyone can participate with respect to these aspects of dementia, where opinions are exchanged between scientific experts, managers, therapists and where patients have a voice of their own.
