The current building of the residence occupies a part of the complex called "Burgo das Nacións", built provisionally in 1965 to house the pilgrims that were arriving in Compostela in that Holy Jacobean Year. It was operated by the Spanish Tourist Administration and had a capacity of about 4,000 places distributed in 47 pavilions.
After the 1965 Jacobean year, this set of modules, built with light, ephemeral materials, covered deficiencies and housed institutions in need of facilities: it was a postgraduate residence, a classroom for several university specialities, the headquarters of the University's printing office and its day nursery, it housed the National Police, etc.
In 1979, USC began using the Burgo das Nacións as a mixed university hall of residence. In the 1986-87 academic year, work began on the current building, which was completed in the 1992-93 academic year.
