Summary
This paper focuses on the use of silence as a narrative and expressive device in Michelangelo Antonioni’s trilogy of incommunication: The Adventure (1960), The Night (1961), and The Eclipse (1962). Through the analysis of fourteen selected scenes, the study explores how silence is integrated into the soundtrack and how it interacts with visual elements to generate an emotional, aesthetic, and philosophical experience. The main objective is to demonstrate that silence does not function as a mere absence of sound, but rather as an active element that structures the narrative and proposes a new way of storytelling, far removed from the vococentric model of classical cinema.
