- Description: Plantando Cara ao Lume (PCL) addresses the problem of forest fires in Galicia from the point of view of environmental education and training.
Galicia is the European region with the highest incidence of forest fires. Although, the problem has been reduced due to improvements in prevention, the effects of fire on natural resources and the economy are still of great magnitude. The application of prevention and restoration techniques is necessary, but must be accompanied by environmental education strategies. Despite the importance of the problem, there are no education and training programmes in Galicia that address the problem of fires.
In this first edition of PCL, students developed and tested education and training materials to increase public awareness regarding the problem. Although there was one more person involved in each faculty, successive methodology managed to involve the whole course. The materials consisted of presentations, field guides and videos that were tested in secondary schools, colleges, university faculties and fire-affected forest communities.
