The Doctoral Programme in Literature and Culture Studies is defined by the emphasis it places on literary studies from different methodological and linguistic perspectives, opening towards cultural analysis. From the previous programmes that fall within this new proposal is that of Theory of Literature and Comparative Literature, originally linked to a Mundus Master's, and that of Study and Annotation of Spanish Literary Texts. Other programmes that belong to Latin, Greek, Italian, French, Galician, Portuguese and German Philology are also included.

El Programa de Doctorado en Estudios de la Literatura y de la Cultura se caracteriza por el énfasis en los estudios literarios desde diferentes perspectivas metodológicas y lingüísticas, con una apertura hacia el análisis cultural.

Entre los programas anteriores que se inscriben en esta nueva propuesta figuran el de Teoría de la literatura y Literatura comparada, vinculado originalmente a un Máster Mundus, y el de Estudio y anotación de textos literarios españoles. Asimismo, se incorporan otros programas que se inscriben en los ámbitos de la filología latina, griega, italiana, francesa, gallega, portuguesa y alemana.

El objetivo es consolidar un programa de carácter competitivo a nivel español e internacional, basándose en una larga y exitosa trayectoria previa en el ámbito específico de los estudios literarios y del análisis cultural. El programa se propone, por otra parte, afianzar una intensa labor de internacionalización, que redunde en beneficio de la formación de los estudiantes y de la competitividad investigadora de la USC.

The aim is to consolidate a competitive programme at a Spanish and international level, based on a long and successful background in the specific field of literary studies and cultural analysis. The Programme proposes, on the other hand, to becoming seriously committed to internationalization, seeking to benefit the training of the students and the USC's research competitiveness.

Students who have completed any of the following official master's degrees will have direct access without the need for supplementary training:

  • Master's in Study and Editing of Spanish and Latin American Literary Texts
  • Master's in English Studies: Current Trends and Applications
  • Master’s in Medieval European Studies: Images, Texts and Contexts
  • Master's in Comparative and Theoretical Studies in Literature and Culture.
  • Master’s in Cultural Services.
  • Erasmus Mundus Master's Crossways in Cultural Narratives.
  • Master's in Language and Culture Studies

Other Master's degrees of Diploma of Advanced Studies in the areas of Humanities and Social Sciences which, according to the academic committee, do not require supplementary.

Regarding the learning activities, once students have been admitted to the doctoral programme, accreditation may be required for certain language levels. B2 level certification is required in order to qualify for participating in the Hermes Seminar.

The academic committee shall decide, at the time of admission of new students, who will require supplementary training. This will probably be required from students from the area of social sciences and, in all probability, those who apply with training in other fields. Applicants from the field of the humanities and, of course, those who have completed the master's courses that provide direct access, will not require any supplementary training. The specific supplementary training subjects will be taken from the common subjects from the Master's Studies in Literature and Culture.

Merits are evaluated by the committee in the following way:

  • Academic transcript: 55%
  • Knowledge of languages (The Academic Committee will take into account the area in which the thesis will be carried out.). Candidates must provide proof (First Certificate, etc.): 15%
  • Professional experience (candidates must provide documentary proof): 5%
  • Research experience (candidates must provide documentary proof): 20%
  • Other merits: 5%

No training complements:

In general, students who have completed a bachelor's degree or a bachelor's degree and a research master's degree assigned to the field of knowledge of Art and Humanities will be able to access this doctoral programme. Within the USC master's degree offering, the following give direct access to the doctoral programme:

1. Master of Study and Editing of Spanish and Latin American Literary Texts.
2. Master of English Studies: Current Trends and Applications.
3. Master's Degree in European Medieval Studies: Images, Texts and Contexts.
4. Master's Degree in Theoretical and Comparative Studies of Literature and Culture.
5. Master's Degree in Cultural Services.
6. Erasmus Mundus Crossways Master in Cultural Narratives.
7. Master in Literature and Cultural Studies.

Other profiles:

For profiles that do not fully comply with the direct access conditions, the CAPD will determine the realization of training complements based on the following subjects of the Master in Literature and Cultural Studies:

- Research methods in literature and culture (3 credits)
- Material bibliography, codicology and history of the book (3 credits)
- Methodological bases of editing and history of literary texts (6 credits)
- Literary criticism and cultural analysis (6 credits)
- Comparative literary studies (6 credits)

Access

1) In general, to access a doctoral programme it will be necessary to be in possession of the Spanish bachelor's degrees, or equivalent, and a university master's degree.

2) mLikewise, anyone who is in any of the following cases may access:

a) Be in possession of a university degree from Spain or from another country that is part of the European Higher Education Area that qualifies for access to the master's degree in accordance with the provisions of article 18 of the R.D. 822/2021 and pass a minimum of 300 ECTS credits in all university studies, of which at least 60 must be at master's level.

b) Be in possession of a Spanish graduate degree, the duration of which, in accordance with community law regulations, is at least 300 ECTS credits. These graduates must take the complementary training required by the programme on a compulsory basis, except that the study plan of the corresponding bachelor's degree includes research training credits equivalent in training value to the research credits from master's studies.

c) University graduates who, after obtaining a place in training in the corresponding test for access to specialised health training places, pass with a positive evaluation at least two years of training in a programme to obtain a degree in one of the specialties. in Health Sciences.

d) Be in possession of a degree obtained in accordance with foreign educational systems, without the need for its homologation, after verification by the university that it accredits a level of training equivalent to that of the Spanish University master's degree and that it authorizes in the country issuing the degree for access to doctoral studies. This admission will not imply, in any case, the approval of the previous degree that the interested party holds or its recognition for purposes other than access to doctoral education.

e) Be in possession of another Spanish doctoral degree obtained in accordance with previous university regulations.

f) Be in possession of a university degree that has obtained the correspondence to level 3 of the Spanish Framework of Qualifications for Higher Education, in accordance with the procedure established in Royal Decree 967/2014, of November 21, by which establish the requirements and procedure for the homologation and declaration of equivalence to a degree and to an official university academic level and for the validation of foreign Higher Education studies, and the procedure to determine correspondence to the levels of the Spanish Framework of Qualifications for Higher Education of the titles of Architect, Engineer, Graduate, Technical Architect, Technical Engineer and Diploma.

3) Doctoral students who will begin their doctoral programme in accordance with previous university regulations will be able to access doctoral education upon admission, in accordance with the provisions of the USC Doctoral Studies Regulations. In any case, they must meet the requirements generally established in said legislation for access to doctoral studies.

4) Graduates, architects or engineers who are in possession of the Diploma of Advanced Studies obtained in accordance with the provisions of Royal Decree 778/1998, of April 30, or who achieve the research proficiency regulated in Royal Decree 185/1985, of January 23.

5) Graduates, architects or engineers who are in possession of a master's degree in accordance with Royal Decree 56/2005 or Royal Decree 822/2021, or have passed 60 ECTS of master's studies, may access doctoral studies.

6) Diploma holders, technical engineers or technical architects who can prove they have 300 ECTS credits in all university studies, of which at least 60 must be at master's level, may also enter.

1) A feasibility report issued by a professor within the framework of the line of research to which it is linked.
2) In addition, the student must have a minimum level of knowledge of one of the following languages, English, Portuguese, French, Italian or German, equivalent to level B1. The required level will be accredited with the corresponding official certification of those included in the list of accreditations recognized by the Centro de Linguas Modernas (CLM) of the USC for the different levels of the Common European Framework: https://www.usc.gal/es/servizos/clm/acreditacion/index.html

1. Academic Record (bachelor’s degree 100% /degree 60%+master 40%) = 50%

2. Report on the viability of the thesis and the suitability of the candidate issued by a professor of the programme. = 30%

3. Other merits (languages, courses, scholarships and contracts, conferences, publications, other degrees, etc.) = 20%

El programa de doctorado podrá extinguirse por alguna de las siguientes causas:

Que no supere el proceso de renovación de la acreditación establecido en el artículo 10 del RD 99/2011.

• Que no acredite el cumplimiento de los requisitos establecidos por la normativa estatal o autonómica vigente.

• Que se formule una propuesta de extinción del programa al amparo de los procesos de revisión y mejora del título de acuerdo con el procedimiento aprobado por la universidad.

• Que concurra cualquier situación excepcional que impida el correcto desarrollo del programa de doctorado.

La extinción producirá los siguientes efectos:

• Comportará la pérdida de su carácter oficial y la baja en el RUCT.

• No se podrá matricular nuevo alumnado en el programa de doctorado.

• En cualquier caso todo el alumnado afectado deberá ser informado de la extinción y de las consecuencias en lo relativo al desarrollo de sus estudios.

La Universidad adoptará las medidas necesarias para garantizar los derechos académicos del estudiantado que esté cursando dichos estudios en los términos establecidos en la resolución de extinción del plan de estudio, y aprobará el procedimiento de extinción de los programas de doctorado en el seno de la universidad.

• Systematic understanding of a field of study and mastery of the skills and research methods related to that field.
• Ability to conceive, design or create, implement and adopt a substantial research or creation process.
• Ability to contribute to expanding the frontiers of knowledge through original research.
• Ability to carry out critical analysis and evaluation and synthesis of new and complex ideas.
• Ability to communicate with the academic and scientific community and with society in general about their areas of knowledge in the modes and languages commonly used in their international scientific community.
• Ability to promote, in academic and professional contexts, scientific, technological, social, artistic or cultural progress within a knowledge-based society.

• Active and critical knowledge, with an interdisciplinary and international perspective, of the methodological and intellectual environment of the contemporary field of literature and cultural studies.
• Competence in the conceptual understanding and practical realization of annotated critical editions that serve as a textual reference for a literary work.
• Competence in knowledge of contemporary literary and cultural theory and its expression in innovative research.
• Competence in the mastery of methodologies, critical and theoretical, of literary studies and the ability to provide new perspectives.

The information about the students who graduated from the programme reveals a high percentage of dedication to secondary or university education. With respect to the first, the two years after completing the thesis are dedicated to preparing for competitive examinations for public education, in some cases after completing the required master's degree. There are also doctors from the programme who access private secondary education. Frequently, the doctor who graduated already had a job in this field during his academic career. Doctors with stable teaching at this level carry out part-time research activity, reflected in publications, conferences and participation in events related to their specialty. Some of his activities related to his postdoctoral research tend to lean towards a more informative and pedagogical level.

Another representative part of the graduated doctors continues their academic career in university centres, national and foreign, through postdoctoral contracts, competitions for access to places and different positions and contracts in Spanish or foreign universities. After obtaining a doctorate, the next step is to obtain accreditation as a doctoral assistant. In foreign universities, this trajectory usually begins with the position of Spanish reader, sometimes simultaneously with the completion of programmes to validate their academic degree. The doctoral graduates who join university centres maintain a high research level, which in their first years is directly related to their doctoral research.

According to the available data, these are the most common departures:

1. Teaching in university higher education, in public and private centres, national and foreign.
2. Teaching in secondary education, in public and private centres.
3. Contracts with national and foreign research centres.
4. Contracts with magazines and publishers specialised in literary publications.
5. Contracts with academies and private translation and teaching centres.

The main objective of this Masters degree is to train professionals and researchers in aquaculture; professionals with a solid recognised training at job level and researchers whose training allows them to carry out their research, with cutting-edge technologies, while keeping abreast of problems in production processing.
